JACOB SOHIVARZ, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
EASEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,856, dated March 28, 1899.
Application filed January 14, 1899. Serial No. 702,128. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB SOHWARZ, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Easels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to easels; and the ob ject of said invention is to provide a simple and efficient support for the picture or other article to be supported upon the easel, which supporting means may be readily attached to an easel of any suitable type or character.
To these ends my invention consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an easel embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail vertical sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings an easel is illustrated which may be of any desired or preferred construction, and said easel is provided with the usual supporting-standards a. To each of these supporting-standards is secured a rack-bar b, which is detachably secured in place by means of screws 0 or some such equivalent means. Each of these rack-bars is provided at the sides thereof with grooves (l, which preferably extend throughout the length thereof. Cooperating with each of these rack-bars is a slide A, which, as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, is provided on each side with a longitudinal flange e,
cated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. At the lower end of each rack-bar is provided a pin it, which limits the downward movement of each of the supports and its carrier. By this means the slides A, with the supports, may be adjusted as to height when the supports are free from pressure, and when a pressure is exerted upon the supports B, as when a picture is supported thereon, they will be secured against movement by forcing the pawls g into engagement with the rack-bars l), and the greater the pressure exerted upon the supports the more socurely will they be maintained against movement;
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. An easel comprising suitable supportingstandards, a rack-bar detachably secured to each of said standards, each of said rack-bars being provided with longitudinal grooves therein, a slide adapted to engage in the grooves of each of said rack-bars, a support pivoted at its upper portion to each of said slides and provided with a pawl at the lower portion thereof which is adapted to engage with its respective rack-bar, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. An easel comprising suitablesupportingstandards, a rack-bar detachably secured to each of said standards, each of said rack-bars being provided with longitudinal grooves in the sides thereof, a slide having engaging flanges adapted to slide in the grooves of each of said rack-bars, a support pivoted at its upper portion to each of said slides and provided with an integral pawl at the lower portion thereof which is adapted to engage with its respective rack bar, whereby the supports may be adjusted to different heights when they are free from pressure and a pressure exerted upon said supports will maintain the pawls thereon in engagement with the rackbars.
