C. W. SMITH. PICTURE RAIL FOR BASELS.
No. 464,045. Patented Dec. 1, 18 91.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES WV. SMITH, OF NORWALK, OHIO.
PICTU RE-RAIL FOR EASELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,045, dated December 1,1891.
Application filed September 16, 1891. Serial No. 405,876. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwalk, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful ImprovementsinPicture-Rails forEasels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in easels, and it has for its object to provide an improved form of picture rail or support which may be readily adjusted at any desired height upon the easel, and which will be securely retained inits adjusted position without the necessity of employing locking devices which have heretofore been employed for the purpose, and without necessitating the disfigurement or weakening of the easel-frame by providing the same with a series of holes for the reception of supporting-pins.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the peculiar construction of the picture-rail, and in providing upon the rear face of the upright rails of the easel-frame a series of knobs or projections, which will serve to permit the picture-rail to be readily adjusted at any desired height, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, like letters of reference I indicating like parts throughout the several the manufacturer, and the easel is provided with the usual inclined brace rod or support 0.
The uprights or rails A of the easel-frame are provided upon their rear faces with a series of knobs or projections D D, which form supports for the picture-rail, as will presently appear.
The picture-rail E consists simply of a rectangular frame composed of the parallel rods E and E of a length slightly greater than the width of the easel. Said rods E and E are connected by means of the rods F F, the distance between the said rods F being slightly less than the distance between the upright rails A A of the easel-frame. The rod E of the picture-rail is provided with arms E against which rests the lower edge of the picture-frame, as is commonin picturerails for use upon easels.
In use the picture-rail is placed upon the uprights A A of the easel, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. It will be seen that the rail may be placed at such a height as to accommodate the picture to be placed upon the easel. The weight of the picture upon the rail will cause the same to tilt downward and thus bind the rail E securely in place against the rear faces of the uprights A A and preventing possible accidental displacement.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A picture-support for easels, consisting of a rectangular frame sliding over the front supporting-legs of the easel-frame and having bearings against the front and rear faces of said legs, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with an easel-frame the front supporting-legs of which are provided upon their rear faces with lugs or projections, as described, of a rectangular frame sliding over the said legs of the easel and bearin g against the front and rear faces thereof, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES W. SMITH.
Witnesses:
FRANK SAWYER, J12, SEWARD SMITH.
