WE /L Patented Aug. 25, 1953 UNITED STATES ?ATE.NT F F ICE :1 .Claim. 1
- 'This'invention relates to a-stand for the display 40f flowers or the li-ke and more particularly to a stand having -a platform which :is readily adjustable in height.
An object -of this invention is to provide a stand having a readily adjustable platform or shelf on which flower containers and the like can be placed.
A further object of this invention is to provide a stand of this type which is Collapsible and which provides a firm and stable support when set up in extended position.
A further object of this invention is to provide a stand of this type which can readily be moved from place to place.
A further object of this invention is to provide a stand of this type on which two or more platforms may be mounted at selected heights,
The above and other objects and features of the invention will in part be apparent and will in part be obvious from the following detailed description and the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing a stand constructed in accordance with an embodiment of this invention, one platform being shown mounted thereon;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the stand illustrated in Fig. 1 with a pair of platforms mounted thereon;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view showing details of one of the platforms;
Fig. 4 is a sectional View taken along a line IV-IV in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view, partly in section along a line V-V in Fig. 2 and partly in elevation of a telescopic connection between frame members of the stand;
Fig. 6 is an enlarged view in rear elevation of the pivot of the rear leg of the stand; and
Fig. '7 is a view in section taken along a line VII-VII in Fig. 4.
In the following detailed description and the drawing like reference characters indicate like parts.
As shown in Fig, 2, the device includes a main frame If! and an inverted U-shaped upper frame l2. Main frame I0 is made up of a pair of side members l3 and a decorative cross member [3 which is attached to and joins the lower ends of the side members. Upper frame l2 similarly includes a pair of parallel side members, as indicated at I4, and a cross member M, which is attached to and joins upper ends of the side members. The side members are tubular, and the side members of frame Ill are of sufficient diam- .eter that the side members of the upper frame can be telescopically received therein. .Oneof the side members of the upper frame is perforated,
as indicated at It in Fig. 5 to receive apin I! .which holds the upper frame in selected extended p.ositions.
Upper ends of side members l3 of the main frame are connected by a cross bar [8 on which a leg I9 is pivotally mounted. As shown in Fig. 1, the stand rests on a non-skid rubber cap 20 mounted on the lower end of leg [9 and on similar caps 2| on the lower ends of the side members of main frame I0.
As shown in Fig. 2, each of the frames is adapted to support one or more shelves or platforms 22. Each platform includes a fiat shelf member 23' (Fig. 4) to the rear corners of which are attached clamping plates 24. Clamping plates 24 extend outwardly on opposite sides thereof, and each clamping plate is provided with a U-shaped slot or jaw 26 adapted to receive one of the side members of one of the frames. The overhang of the platform is sufficient to cause the jaws to bite into the side members to secure the platform to the frame. The spacing between the arms of each jaw is just sufficiently greater than the diameter of the side members of the frame with which the shelf is associated that each of the platforms is held in substantially horizontal position. As shown in Fig. '7, the shelf member of each platform may be sufficiently wide to be arched upwardly when not loaded so that when a load is placed on the platform, the jaws are urged outwardly so that the cross members of the jaws r engage the side members.
As shown in Fig. 1, each platform can support a substantial load such as a container 21 for fiowem or the like. The frames can quickly be extended for use or retracted and dismantled for ease in storage. When the stand is to be stored the leg [9 can be swung into alignment with the side members l3. As shown in Fig. 6, a pin 28, which extends radially of cross bar 18, extends through a slot 29 in the head 3| of le IS. The pin keeps the leg centered on the crossbar and limits the extent to which leg 19 can swing.
The stand can be used to support a single platform, as shown in Fig. l, or one platform can be mounted on each frame, as shown in Fig. 2. If desired, additional platforms can be attached to either or both frames of the stand. Finally, the platforms can readily and quickly be adjusted up or down the frames to any desired height. When desired, each platform can be removed quickly by raising the overhanging end of the platform until the jaws are released and then twisting the platform to free it from the frame side members.
The stand illustrated in the drawing and described above is intended particularly for use in supporting flowers at funerals and the like but may be used for other purposes and is subject to structural modification without departing from either the spirit or the scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In an adjustable stand, a main frame comprising spaced parallel side members, means for supporting said frame in a substantially vertical position, a shelf mounted on said side members and projecting forwardly therefrom, said shelf comprising a bowable semi-rigid flexible plate member, a pair of supporting members carried by said shelf on opposite sides thereof each adjacent one of said parallel members, each supporting member comprising a pair of spaced jaws forming a recess therebetween facing outwardly toward its adjacent parallel member and receiving its adjacent parallel member therein, the distance between the bases of the recesses being greater than the distance between the parallel frame members when the supporting members are in engagement with the frame members with the shelf upwardly bowed whereby the jaws more firmly engage the parallel members when load is applied to the shelf, said jaw members lying to the front and rear of their respective frame members so that load applied forwardly of the frame members causes tilting of the jaws to grip said frame members.
