Description

w. c. HlGLEY FOLDING LEG TABLE Filed Dec. 6, 1945 Nov. 14, 1950 A TTO R N EYS fTg-E [NVE'NTOR Whiz; 6. 7 02%;
Patented Nov. 14, 1950 FOLDING LEG; TABLE i Walter C. Higley, :Hillsdala Mich. Application December 6, 1945, SerialNo. 633,175
' This invention relates to a table and more particularly to a table having several interchangeable table tops containing an assortment of game boards which are securely locked in position by the use of clamps in cooperation with wedge means located near the top of the leg so that when the legs are folded the table tops will not fall out.
An object of the invention is to provide a table having hinged legs which are adapted to fold toward the center of the table and to avoid overlapping; the legs are made telescopic.
Thus the height of the table can be adjusted as desired and the legs when folded are retained in place by spring tensioned braces.
With the foregoing and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of an embodiment of the invention showing the legs in folded position and secured in place by the spring tension braces.
Figure 2 is a sectional view of a corner of the table taken approximately on the line AB showing the removable tops securely locked in place by means of a pivoted clamp in combination with a locking device attached to the top part of each leg.
Figure 3 is a sectional view showing one of the legs in extended position for use with a section of the brace locked thereto and the clamp unlocked permitting the removable tops to be lifted out.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the hold down clamps.
Figure 5 is a sectional view showing a telescoping leg section with a clip arrangement attached thereto by which means the brace is rigidly held in place.
Figure 6 is a detailed view of a brace bracket showing the method of attaching the spring to the brace and to the bracket.
Referring more in detail to the drawing the reference numeral I designates the border frame of the stationary top 3 which is preferably made of plywood and a block 2 positioned at each corner of the frame is joined to the frame by tongue and groove as shown in Figures 2 and 3.
Positioned and nested on the top 3 are the removable and interchangeable tops 4 and 5 which are retained within the border frame I and blocks 2.
Hold down clamps 6 for the removable tops 3 Claims. (01. 311-77) are pivotally mounted in a groove 2" in the face'of each of the blocks 2 by meansof' the rod 6 and to permit full swing of the clamps the blocks are cutout at I9 and the top 3 at Ill-as shown in Figures 2 and 3. 1
The. top or tubular section 1 of the leg has the lower section 8 slidable and telescopically mounted therein and clips I5 and notches I6 are placed at predetermined locations along-the length of the leg section 8. A slot 9 cut into the leg sections I, is adapted to receive the apex end of the brace Ill thus permitting the brace IE! to engage the notch I6 and'be firmly locked in place bymeans of the tongue on the clip I5. The braces I6 are V-shaped as shown in Figure 1 and the ends thereof are bent in a plane parallel to the blocks 2 to which the upper ends of the legs are hinged.
The free ends of the braces Ill are received in the bracket I2 secured to the frame I at 010- posite sides of the legs and a spring II mounted on the end of the braces tensions the braces to hold the legs in folded position. The legs are hinged by means of a screw eye I3 and a pintle pin I l in the upper end of the legs. The clamps for retaining the tops in position are adapted to lock the top firmly in the frame I when the legs are folded by entering the wedge slot I4 in th leg section I. The clamp 6 is wedged shape at 20 where it enters the slot I4 to conform to the shape thereof. The tops however can be removed when the table is in use since the clamp 6 will not engage the slots I4, when the legs are in upright position.
There has thus been provided a table having folding telescopic legs, spring tensioned braces for locking the legs toward the center of the table, pivotal clamps for holding removable tops on the table, the clamps coacting with the legs to lock the tops in position when the table is in folded position. The braces being V-shaped in cross section are adapted to rigidly hold the legs in extended position.
It is believed that the operation and construction of the device will be apparent to those skilled in the art and it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. In a folding table having a top provided with four corners the improvement comprising, a telescopic adjustable foldable leg pivotally upper member and be received in the notch in N the lower member to retain the members in extended relation to each other.
2. An adjustable leg fora table comprising an upper tubular member and a lower tubular member in telescopic arrangement with each other, tongued clips carried by" the lower tubular member interiorly of the upper tubular member, said lower tubular member having downwardly curved notches therein rearwardly of the tongue on said tongued: clips and said upper tubular member having an opening therein adapted to be selectively alined with said notches, a spring tensioned V-shaped brace, means carried by said table for pivotally receiving the free ends of said brace so that the apex of said brace may enter said opening and be received in said clips to retain said members in extended relation to each other.
3. In a folding table having a permanent top provided with four angled ends and a marginal rim border on said top and removable tops receivable on the permanent top within the border the improvement comprising a sectional tubular leg pivoted to each angled end of said table and said leg having said sections in telescopic arrangement with each other, a pivoted spring tensioned V-shaped brace carried by the table and means on said leg fixed to said leg and having a tongue thereon co-acting with the apex of said brace to retain said sectional leg in extended adjusted relation of the sections to each other.
