ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMILIE CIIRIS'IENSEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LEGGIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,326, dated April 14, 1891.
Application filed February 13, 1890. Serial No. 340,285- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, EMILIE CHRISTENSEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, (W'oodlawm) in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leggins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention isa leggin the bodyof which is of a tubular form, andto which is attached a pair of lacing-strips at the front and back of the article, adapted to receive a cord or other similar device fordrawing the strips of each pair toward each other, thereby tightening the leggin and shaping it to the limb of the wearer, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I represents a side view of a leggin embodying my invention. Fig. II representsafront view thereof. Fig. Ill represents a back view thereof. Fig. IV represents a horizontal section thereof. Fig. V represents a cross-section of one of the lacing-strips on an enlarged scale. Fig. VI represents a plan view taken on line m :c, Fig. I.
Similar letters indicate similar parts.
The letter A indicates the body of the leggin, which may be composed of cloth, either plain or water-proof, or any other suitable material, and formed in one piece, it being tubular without openings, except the top and bottom, and B B C C are the lacingstrips arranged in pairs at the front and back of the leggin. Said strips 13 B C C extend in the longitudinal plane of the leggin, and each is attached to the tubular body Aat one edge, as by stitching e,while it is provided with astay 0 at the other edge, where it is left free or disconnectcd, said stay being inclosed in a pocket, which for convenience is formed by suitably folding the material of which either strip is composed.
In each of the stripsB B is formed a row of holes s,which are usnall y provided with eyelets,
and in which is properlyinsertcd a cord 2' for adjusting said strips in relation to each other; but in lieu of said cords buckles or any other similar fastening devices may be used, in which event said holes of the strips may be omitted.
When theleggin is to be applied to use, it is drawn over the foot onto the proper part of the limb, and the cords i are adjusted for drawing the strips 15 B C C toward each other, when by the action of said stripsthc lcggin is tightened and made to conform accurately to the shape of the limb which it incloses, thereby producing a neat and comfortable fit.
The utility of the strips B 13 C C is enhanced by their positions at the front and back of the leggin and also by the stays 0, due to the tendency of said stays to preserve the leggin in shape of the limb.
I am aware that a leggin has heretofore been formed with an opening and a flap or tongue attached to one edge of the opening, and I do not claim such as my invention, the essential feature of which is the tubular body without opening, whereby I insure an absolutely water and sand tight condition of the leggin.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A leggin having the tubular body A formed in one piece and without longitudinal opening and provided with a pair of lacing-strips B O at the front and back of the article, extending longitudinally thereof, each strip inclosing a stay at the free edge and each pair thereof constructed to receive a cord or other similar fastening for shaping said body to the leg of the wearer, substantially as and for the purpose described.
