To all whom 2'17' may concern f Be it known that I, CHRXSTIAN BAETZEL, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Garments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.

` The present invention relates to garments,

and it has-for its object to provide a waist line garment that may be supported either by Suspenders or by means of a belt, so as to give a perfect set and smoothness to the garment under all conditions.

A further purpose' of the invention is to form a belt with the garment, the belt serving as a waist band for a portion of its length.

- To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claim at the end of the specification'.

comfort tothe wearer, and the appearance of a misfit garment by reason of the thickness of -the folds and the fact of their being formed 4at undetermined points. The present invention is designedto overcome these disadvantages by the provision of a waist band of such construction tliat when a belt is tightened, the excess cloth will be taken Y up by plaits which are formed readily at determined points causing the garment to tit snugly to the body, and at once, to conceal the folds and present a smooth and perfect fit-ting garment.

The invention, as herein illustrated, is embodied i'n a garment comprising a bodyportion 1 and waist band 2. Suitably att-ached to the garment body is a belt, consisting of the part 3 which constitutes the rear portion ofthe waist band of the garment, and the free ends 4 adapted to be secured t0- gether at the front. It is to beinoted that the garment body is providedwith a front waist band portion Q, which, however, extends only to the points of attachment of the belt, the latter serving as a waist band for the back of the garment, as explained. The front waist band portion 2 is secured to the rear waist band portion or belt 3 at the points 5 at each side of the garment, and a lining G is secured inside the' waist band as usual. Between the lining 6 andthe waist band, is a stitfening portion 7, entirely surrounding t-he garment, except at each side where the stitfening is omitted, so as'to provide a very flexible and yieldable portion t0 form the plaits 8, shown in Fig. 4. The unstiffened portion of the waist band prefer- 'ably extends from the points of attachment 5 of the belt forwardly tothe first belt loops,

or for a distance of about'one and one-half inches, although this may be varied for different garments. The stiifening in the rear waist band portion is continued at the front so as to form a stitfening for the belt ends, the latter being provided with a suitable lining 9. Belt loops l0 may be provided at the front and sides of the garment, for guiding the belt ends, as is usual in garments ofthis type. `When the belt ends are secured together, taken up/at each side by the formation of the and tightened, the excess -clothisvlA 0 plaits in the unstidened portions ofthe waist band, and in such a manner that the garment easily adjusts itself to the body of the wearer without any attending discomfort, and also preserves a smoothly fitting exterior, ythe folds in by reason of their position atthe sides.

, It will be readily apparent that bv the present constructin, there is provi ed a very simple and inexpensive garment-which' accomplishes all the purposes desired, and

I claim as my invention: y

In a rpair of trousers, the combination. with a waist band having a continuous or unbroken outer cloth surface,.of belt ends arranged to overlie the front part of the waist band, said belt ends being formed integral with the rear part of the Waist band, beltloops at the sides of the Waist band to receive the belt ends, and a stiffening medium secured to the outer cloth surface of the Waist band, said stitfening medium being omitted or cut away at points adjacent to said' belt loops whereby to form folds or plaits in the outer cloth surface of the Waist band at said points.
