To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY M. LINDEN- THAL, a citizen of the United States, resid- 7 ing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a specification.

It is an object of my invention to provide new and novel means for adjusting a garment, peculiarly adapted for use in connection with inner or outer garments for men or women, such as coats, jackets, vests, trousers, over-coats or the like, so designed as to be used across the back or front of the garment and when used across the front. is adapted to relieve the buttons in front from the strains imposed thereon. A further object is to provide such adjusting meansdesigned to serve the dual purpose of either an adjustment across the back of the garment or a belt across the front.

The above and other features of advantages and capabilities will become apparent from a detailed description of the accompanying drawings in which I have illustrated one form of my invention, but the form there shown is to be understood as illustrative only.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the vest is of the usual form consisting of the front 10, the back 11, sewed together at the sides at the seams 12. In the seams 12 there is sewed at one end a pair of adjusting straps 18 and 1st, one of which straps carries at its free end a buckle 15. The straps are adapted for a dual purpose, that is, both for adjustment and as an ornamental belt and are adapted to be connected together at their free ends by means of the buckle 15 either at the front or back of the garment, as desired. ered with goods of the same design as the front of the garment, while the opposite side, which is exposed when the straps are in the position as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, is covered with lining material, the same as is used in the back of the garment. Both coverings extend from the extreme ends of the straps into the side seams 12, so that a finished appearance is presented regardless of which position they may be in. lVhen the straps are in the position shown in Fig. 1 they not only serve as an ornamental belt, but may also be used for adjusting the vest to the wearer, and, when so used relieve the buttons on the front of the garment from the strains usually imposed thereon, thus preventing the garment in front from wrinkling or rolling, which would be the result if the buttons were not relieved from the strain or tension. The straps 13 and 14:, when connected together across the front of the vest are in alinement with the top of the lower vest pockets 16 and extend through keepers 17, thus tending to hold the top of these pockets in closed position and sufficiently tight so that the surreptitious removal of any object from these pockets would not only be readily detected, but would, in fact, be dillicult to remove by any one except the wearer. The keepers 17 also serve the additional function of preventing the straps from upward and downward movement with respect to the garment. l/Vhen it is desired to use the straps merely for adjusting purposes the free ends are extended across the back of the garment, connected together and adjusted by means of the buckle.

The buckle 15 as shown, is of oblong form made in one piece in the center of which is a bar 18 to which one end of the strap 1 1 is secured, as best shown in Fig. 4. On either side of the bar 18 the buckle 15 is, on its under vertical sides, provided with flanges 19, which, when the strap 13 is drawn therethrough, tend to bite into it and securely hold it in place.

While I have herein described my invention as applied to a vest, I do not wish to be understood as limiting its use to that particular garment, as it is adapted for use in connection with any garment for men, or women where adjustment is desired.

Various changes and modifications may be made by those skilled in the art Without departing from the scope of my invention as defined in the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention I claim:
