Be it known that I, ERNEST GRAHAM PUL- IJUM. of London, in the county of 'Middlesex, England, have invented a new and useful Improvcment in Connections for Suspender-Ends and other Portions of Garment-Supporters, (for which Letters Patent of the United Ki ugdom of Great Britain and Ireland, No. 12,173, have been granted and dated September 8,

1.887,) of which the following is a specification.

The object'of the invention is to enable the wearer to easily and quickly disconnect the parts of the suspendcr or garment-supporter without the necessity for removing or unfastr 5 euing the coat, vest, or outer garment and without unbuttoning the ends or tabs from the trousers or garment suspended, and thereby unnecessarily wearing or tearing the buttonholes or subjecting the buttons to unnecessary 2o liability to be torn off.

To this end the invention consists, essen tially, in a novel. construction of a spring-snap, one member of which is permanently attached to a buckle or link on the main portion of the :5 suspcndcr or brace, and the other member is permanently attached to the ends or tabs, which are buttoned to the waistband oi the garment.

The invention is illustrated in the accom' 3o panying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a face View showing the parts in posit-ion for use. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the upper member of the snap attached to a buckle on the main portion of the suspcndcr. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken in the line a: x of Fig. 1. Fig. is an end view of the -uppcr member of the snap, and Fig. 5 an end view of the lower member. Fig. (i is a partlysectional View showing the form and construe 0 tion of the parts and their positions when connected together.

A designates the upper member of the snap,

0 designates the strap or webbing, which forms the main portion of the suspender or brace, and D I) the tabs or suspender-ends, which are provided with button-holes for engagcmcnt with the buttons on the garment.

E is a buckle on the shoulder-strap G.

The upper member, A, of the snap, which is to remain attached to the strap 0, consists of a box or socket, and is represented as made of a metal plate doubled midway of its length, sons to surround or hook over one of the sides of the frame of the buckle E or a slide or link attached to or carried by the strap C. One portion of the plate is continued downward in the same plane from the doubled portion to form the back of the socket, and the other portion is continued downward parallel with the first-named portion to form the front of the socket. The lower corners of the said front and back portions of the doubled plate are provided with lugs a, which are turned inward and bent so as to hook into each other, for the purpose of holding the front and back portions of the plate permanently in place to complete the socket and to form shoulders or bearers on opposite sides of the socket, with openings a a above them, as shown in Figs. 2 and (3, for the engagement of spring-actuated catches or slides G, to be presently dcscribet in the lower member of the snap.

The lower member of the snap, to which the suspcnder ends or tabs are connected pcrmanently, consists of a socket, B B two sliding catches, G- G, partly contained therein, but projecting through openings in the sides there- So of, and a spiral spring, 8, interposed between said catches. The said socket has a loop, Z, at its bottom for the attach ment of the tabs D 1). lhe said catches G (l have on the outer sides of their upper part beveled latch-like projec- 8 5 tions g, which project through openings in the upper part of the ends of the box or socket l3 1*, and which may pass between the lugs a of the socket A. and slip through the holes (1. above, and so be caused to engage with the shoulders formed by the upper edges 01' said lugs, as shown in Iliig. 6, by the pressure of the spring s. The said catches have also on their lower parts outward projections g", which always protrude, as shown in Figs. 1 and 6, through openings in the sides of the socket B B". By taking these projections between the thumb and. finger and pressing them inward they are disengaged from the shoulders of the lugs a, and the entire lower member of the I00 strap with the attached tabs D D are detached from the upper member, which remains attached to the shoulder strap or brace.

To attach the tabs or ends to the shoulder strap or brace, the lower member of the snap is presented to the opening in the bottom of the socket A with the bevels of the latches 9 against the lower edges of the lugs a, and from this position it is pushed upward. The latches are thus caused to pass between'the said lugs at" until they pass over the shoulders formed by the upper edges thereof and slip out through the openings a, forming a perfect lock until it is desired to detach the parts again, when it is only necessary to press inward the ends 9 of the catches and *pull apart the upper and lower parts of the connections.

The socket B B is represented as made of two fiat plates, B and B fastened together by turning their upper and lower edges inward and lapping and clamping them together, as shown at I) b in Fig. 3. The back plate, B, is

7 represented as having provided'in it, as shown in Fig. 3, an internal recess for the reception of the spring 8.

What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

opposite sides, and the other member of which consists of a box or socket, two sliding catches arranged within said box or socket and pro truding through openings in opposite sides thereof, and a spring interposed between said catches to force them both outward into engagement with the lugs or shoulders of the first-named member, substantially as herein described.

2. The combination of the box or socket A, having'openings a and lugs or shoulders (6 ft? on opposite sides, the box or socket B B the sliding catches G G, contained in said box or socketB B and having the protruding latchlike projections g g on their upper parts and thumb and finger projections on their lower parts, and the spring 8, interposed between the said sliding catches, all substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
