(a QNVENTOR:
ATTORNEY.
WITNESSES: M4,. (Q 5 UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE JOHN C. BOLEN, OF MOOONNELLSVILLE, OHIO.
COAT-SLEEVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,052, dated March 8, 1887.
Application filed October 15, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN G. BOLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at McConnellsville, in the county of. Morgan, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coat-Sleeves, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a section of a coat-sleeve and a side elevation of the portion within the same embodying my invention. Fig. 2 repre sents a section of the outer and inner portions of the sleeve.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists in providing a coatsleeve with means whereby cold air, &c., is prevented from reaching the arm of the wearer at the wrist.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a portion of a coat-sleeve, and B represents a short sleeve within the same, secured at its inner end to the adjacent portion of the outer sleeve and adapted to have the hand of the wearer passed through the same when the coat is being put on. The outer end of the inner sleeve is contracted, so as to embrace the wrist of the wearer, leaving the adjacent end of the outer sleeve loose around the wrist, as usual.
In order to cause the inner sleeve to close tightly on the wrist, there is secured to the same a rubber or other elastic band or cord, G, which is inclosed in the binding, cuff, or finishing portion D of said sleeve, and yields as the hand passes through the latter, and then contracts, pressing said portion D on the wrist. By this provision the outer end of the Serial No. 179,937. (No model.)
wrist is virtually closed, and thus cold air or rain, snow, &o., is prevented from blowing up the sleeve, whereby the arm is kept warm or dry, or both.
In order to prevent the inner sleeve from being pulled up into the outer sleeve to any material extent when the hand is withdrawn in removing the coat, there are attached to the front end of the inner sleeve and adjacent portion of the outer sleeve pieces of braid, tapes, or strips of material E, which, while not interfering with the expanding and contract ing motions of the outer end ofthe inner sleeve, serve to limit the withdrawal of the inner sleeve and prevent material intnrning of said sleeve, so that as the coat is again being put on the hand readily enters the inner sleeve without finding serious disarraugement thereof.
I am aware that it is not new to provide a sleeve with a wristlet having an elastic band within the same, and such Ido not claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The outer sleeve, A, in combination with the inner sleeve, B, having a contracted outer end, the elastic band C and the cuff D being secured directly to the contracted end of sleeve B, and the strips E, secured to outer end of sleeve B and to an adjacent part of sleeve A, the said sleeve B being also secured at its inner end to the sleeve A, all substantially as described.
JOHN G. BOLEN.
