turning the button, act as UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLARENCE R. FERGUSON, OF WASHINGTON,
DIsTRIoT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT I N GLOVE- FASTENlNGS.
Specification forming part of Letters'Patent No. 172,009, dated J auua ry 11, 1876; application filed November 30, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE R. FERGU- SON, of Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Glove Buttons or Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents'the top face of the button. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the under side of the button with arms closed. Fig. 3 is the same with the arms extended.
My invention relates particularly to that class of buttons designed for fastening gloves; and it consists ilfattaching to the under side of the button two arms or clasps, which, upon levers to draw together the parts of the glove.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to de scribe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawings, A represents a button, provided with the arms a, a, pivoted to the under side of the button at b b, and of a length to fold snugly under the button and out of view when in the position shown in Fig. 2. The outer ends of the armsare provided with a hook, c c, to fasten into eyes to be secured to the glove; or one arm may be provided with an eye to be permanently sewed or otherwise attached to the glove, leavingonly one arm to be attached and detached, as required in fastenin g and unfastenin g the glove. By means of the semicircular slots at d in the arms the hooks c c are allowed to pass beyond the line of strain, which would cause them to unfold, and the strain is caught upon the pivoted end of the opposite arm, which acts as a stop and secures the arms in the position shown in Fig. 2. To release the fastening it is only necessary to turn the button slightly until the strain is thrown outside of the line of strain, and the arms immediately unfold, as shown in Fig.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A glove buttoner or fastener, consisting of the button A, in combination with the pivoted levers a a, adapted to be applied to the wristopening of a glove, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
