UNITED STATES PivrieNT GEORGE W. MASDRILL, 0F
GLOVE-F SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters GLOVERSVI LLE, NEW YORK.
ASTENER.
Patent No. 274,507, dated March 27, 1883.
Application filed January l1, iil. (No model.)
and it has for its object to provide simple and durable fasteners, which shall be convenient, inexpensive, and easily manipulated to fasten or unfasten the glove, and which shall also present a neat appearance, all as will he hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
ln the drawings hereto Aannexed, Figure l is a perspective view of a glove equipped with my improved fasteners. Fig. 2 is a. transverse sectional view, of the same when fastened. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the parts of the fastener detached. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a glove equipped with a modified form ot' my improved fasteners. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view of the same when fastened; and Fig. G is a view showing in perspective the parts forming the modified forni oi' the fastener det-ached.
The same letters refer to the saine parts in all the iigures.
My improved glove-titstener consists, essentially, of two parts-viz., a-loop attached to oneilap ot the glove, and a Vlever having a hook at its end, and so constructed and at tached to the other iiap of the glove that by adjusting its hooked end over the loop and moving its tulernin the said lever may he slid under the loop, thus fastening the glove securely.
ln the accompanying drawings, A designates a glove, to the flap of which, l5, is secured the loop part of the fastener, vvhioii,l as in the drawings, may be formed of a. piece of wire by bending the central portion ot said wire so as to forni a loop or bail, C, from the ends ot' which the arms D D project in oppo site directions, as shown. Said arms D are, in the process of manufacture, inserted under the outer skin of the glove, between that and the lining E, (in unlined gloves a special liningstrip may be provided nl, only the loop C projecting, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4 of the drawings.
The lever part of the fastener has in Figs. l, 2, and Soi' the drawings been shown as constructed from a single piece ot wire by bend ing the saine so as to form a central loop, which constitutes the lever F. Arms G G projectin opposite directions from the ends of the loop forming the lever, and serve for attaching the same to the other iiap, H, of the glove, in the outer end oi the loop or lever F is bent Aso as to forni a downturned hook, I. The inner end of the loop or lever F is also lient at J, so as to raise the said loop or lever slightly above the arms Gr, thus affording a more convenient and secure hold.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 4:, 5, and 6 ofthe drawings the loop or hail@` is retained without change; but for the wire leerwise formed from sheet metal,` and designated in the drawings by the letter L. Said lever is bent at `its outer end, so as to form a hook, M, and near its inner end it is provided with two slots, N N, to admit a. wire, O, h v which it is secured to the flap El of the glove, and which forms the fulcrum upon which the said lever may turn. The extreme inner end of the lever L forms a handle, P, by means ot' which the said lever maybe conveniently ma nipnlated. Although with this form of fastA enng l have retained the wire loop C, as being the most simple and convenient, l would have itunderstood that with this, or, in fact, with either ,form of fastening, a loop stamped or formed from sheet metal, or otherwise. constructed, and secured to the iap B of the glove in any suitable manner, may be substituted without departing from the spirit of my invention. ikewise do l reserve the privilege ot' constructing the lever in other ways than those mentioned, provided, ofcourse, that itsleading characteristics are retained.
The operation ot' my invention is exceedingly simple, and will be readily understood from lthe foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. It is only necessary to adjust the downtnrned this point,) leaving same manner as the loop C is attached. The
ver F, I have substituted one stamped or oth- IOC hook at the outer end of the lever in the, loop C. Then raise the inner or fulcrum end ot' the lever until the latter slides through the loop and rests against the inside ofthe flap H of the glove. The latter will then be securely fastened. To unfasten it the operation is simply reversed. B y this device considerable leverage is had, and a firm hold is had upon the lever, thus making the manipulation thereof easy and convenient. No springs or other devices are necessary to hold the lever in place when adjusted, thus avoiding the bulkiness, which is an objectionable feature ot other lever-l t'astenings, and enabling me to produce a neater and less expensive article. It Will also be Worthy of notice` that when in use the fastening device is nearly or entirely concealed under the ilap of the-glove, so that it Will not be liable to catch in the clothes ofthe wearer, or in other objects. a
This device is applicable to shoe fasteners, and I therefore do not Wish to be understood as vconfining it to gloves alone.
I am aware lthat .in a shoe-fastening` a sliding rod has been connected to one Hap and adapted to slide through an eyelet or loop atfached to the other ilap and under the lla-p to which it is connected. This I disclaim.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. In a glove-fastening, the` combination,
- with a loop attached to one flap of a glove, o f
a lever pivoted permanently to the under side ot' the other lla-p, andv having a downturned hook at its outer end, whereby it may be-passed through the loop from the outer side of the latter and turned under the ap of the glove to which it (the said lever) is attached, substantially as set forth.
2. In a 'glove-fastening, the combination, with a loop attached to one Hap of a glove, of the herein-described lever, pivoted to the other flap, and consisting of a loop bent from Wire, and having arms at its inner end extending in opposite directions, the said lever being bent near its inner end, so as to raise it above the said arms, and at its outer end, so as to form a downturned hook', substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoingas my own I have hereto aftlxed my signature in presence of tivo Witnesses.
GEORGE W. MANDRILL.
