UNITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VICTOR TINGUE VAN SLYKE, OF SHELL ROCK, IOWVA.
NECKTlE-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 631,730, dated August 22, 1899.
Application filed Much Z 1, 1 8 9 8.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VICTOR TINGUE VAN SLYKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shell Rock, in the county of Butler and State of Iowa, have invented a new and usef ul Improvementin Necktie-Fasteners, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a detail view of my improved necktie-fastener; Fig. 2, a view of the inner side of a necktie, showing the manner of applying the fastener; and Fig. 3', the same view showing the fastener in a closed position.
My invention pertains to certain improvements in devices for fastening neckties, particularly that class designed to engage the projecting heads of collar buttons or studs;
and my purpose is to provide a simple, reliable, and durable appliance whereby neckties or bows may be easily adjusted and securely fixed in the desired position in such a manner that they cannot become accidentally disengaged or displaced.
The peculiar construction and exceptional advantage of the invention will be apparent by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- A represents a collar, 2 a necktie of the ordinary style, and 3 the projecting head of a collar button or stud to which the ends of the collar are attached.
The fasteneris made of suitable sheet metal and consists of a depending section 4, preferably semicircular in form and having perforations to admit a needle and thread by. which it may be conveniently attached to the inner Serial No. 674,578. (No model.)
Fig. 2. The bow being then turned upwardly toward the front, the hooks will necessarily con verge, one being lapped or folded upon the other, and closely engage the neck of the collar-button, as shown in Fig. 3. It is obvious that being thus secured the tie or bow cannot become displaced or released except by reversing the manipulation required to fasten the same.
hat I claim as new is A device for fastening neckties, bows and like appliances consisting of a substantially triangular depending plate 4, provided with means for attachment to a tie, its two upper sides forming an obtuse angle, the hookshap'ed jaws 6, hinged respectively to the said upper sides of the plate and thereby adapted, when folded upon the said depending plate, to converge and engage a collar button or stud substantially as herein specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of March, 1898.
VICTOR TINGUE VAN SLYKE.
