COLLAR-BUTTON.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,744, dated January 28, 1896. Application filed May 10,1895. Serial No. 548,845. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FERDINAND A. WAT- TENBERG, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented anew and Improved Collar-Button, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved collar-button which is simple and durable in construction, and more especially designed for use on the front of the neokband to hold the ends of the collar closed and the tie, scarf, or other neckwearin proper position to prevent the same from slipping or creeping up.

The invention consists principally of a plate hinged on the button-head and provided with prongs.

The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in allthe figures.

Figure 1 is an enlarged face view of the improvement with the plate closed. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. I Fig. 3 is a face view of the same with the plate in an open position, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the same.

The collar-button is provided with the usual base A, the shank B, and the head 0, of which the latter is formed at or near its middle with an opening or recess 0, into which fits a plate D, connected at its upper end by a hinge E with the said head, so that when the plate D is closed the head presents the usual appearance, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, and the button can be readily placed in position in the buttonhole of the neckband to connect the ends of the collar with the button. The plate D is adapted to be swunginto an uppermost position, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and the plate is provided on its back with prongs D, which extend downward when the plate is open, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 4E. l/Vhen the plate D is closed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, then the said prongs D are inside of the head.

In order to hold the plate D in an uppermost or open position as well as in a closed position, I provide the plate with a springhinge or with a projection D pressed on by a a spring F attached to the inside of the head, as indicated in the drawings.

Now, it will be seen that when the collarbutton is in position in the neckband and the collar ends are attached thereto, then the operator, before tying the tie or placing the scarf or other neckwear on the collar, swings the plate D upward, so that the tie, scarf, or other neckwear is directly attached to the said prongs to securely hold the tie or other neckwear in place. and prevent it from slipping upward or sidewise, it being understood that a the prongs enter the material at the back thereof and the plate as well as the head 0 o the button are entirely out of sight.

If desired, the lower or free end of the plate may be formed with a slight projection D adapted to be taken hold of by the users finger-nail, so as to conveniently swing the plate D into an open position.

It is expressly understood that the button, when applied to the neckband and the ends of the collar, has its plate D closed, so that the collar-button can be readily passed through the buttonholes the same as the ordinary buttons.

I do not limit myself to any peculiar form of base, shank, and head of the button, as the same may be varied without deviating from my invention, the principal feature of which is the hinged plate on the head and the prongs on the back of the plate.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a collar-button comprising a base-plate, a shank and a hollow head, having an opening in its front end, a plate hinged to one wall of said opening and adapted to turn outward in a line substantially parallel with the head and having prongs which will be within the head when the plate is turned into the opening and which will project outward when the plate is turned to engage neckwear, substantially as specified.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a collar button provided with a hollow head having an opening in its front, a plate hinged to move into saidopening and allaptedwhen in operative position to extend in a substantially parallel line with the head and having prongs to engage with a necktie when said plate is turned to an open position, the said open position being the normal position of the plate when in use to hold a necktie andthe spi-in within the head engaging with the hinged plate, substantially as specified.
