SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,542, dated October 6, 1885.

To @ZZ whom t may concern/ Be it known that we, FRANCIS J. FREEsE and FRED C. BALDWIN, of Manchester, in the county of Hillsborough, State of New Hampshire, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Neckties or Oravats, of which the following is a description sufficiently full,

clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which# Figure 1 is a rear elevation of ourimproved necktie or cravat; Fig. 2,a vertical longitudinal section of the same; Fig. 3,2m isometrical perspective view of the catch detached; Fig. 4, a rear elevation showing a modification of the improvement; Fig. 5, a vertical longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 6 an isometrical perspective view of the catch shown in Fig. 4, detached.

Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.

Our invention relates more especially to means for securing or attaching the tie or cravat to the collar, stud, or button of the wearer; and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a more effective and desirable article of this character is produced than is now in ordinary use.

The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation, its extreme simplicity rendering an elaborate description unnecessary.

In the drawings, A represents the body of the tie, and B a flap which falls downwardly from the neck portion at the rear of the body. This flap is preferably attached at the top and sides to the body A, but is left detached therefrom at its center on and near the vertical dotted line r. An eyelet, C, is inserted in the flap B near its center, and attached to its lower side by rivets or stitches there is a catch, D, provided with an inwardly-projecting ange, E, having the lateral slot z. A

cord, G, having an elongated loop, m, at its upper end, is inserted beneath the flap B, the loop passing outwardly through the eyelet C, and one of its members being provided wltha ring, d, to prevent the loop from being accidentally withdrawn from the eyelet.

In the use of our improvement the loop m is passed over the collar, stud, or button, after which the tie or cravat is raised as. far as possible or sufficiently to bring it Into proper position, and secured by forcing the body of the cord into the narrow slot z of the catch D, in which it is wedged and rmly held in a manner which will be readily obvious Without a more explicit description.

The ring d should be large enough to prevent it from being drawn through the eyelet, and affords a convenient and inexpensive means for keeping the loop of the cord in proper position; but the ring Imay be omitted, If desired,and a bar extended across the eyelet beL tween the members of the loop, or any other suitable means for accomplishing the Same result may be employed.

The loop is preferably formed by securing one end or" the cord, to its body, as shown at f,- but, if preferred, a knot may be made in the end of the cord, as shown at Z in Figs. 4 and 5, and a running noose, g, formed of the upper portion of its body, the noose extending through the eyelet, as best seen in Fig. 4, and being` adapted to pass over the stud in securing the tie or cravat in substantially the same manner as the loop.

In place of a catch having the lateral slot z, one may be used having the vertical slot t, as shown in Figs. 4L and 6; or any other suitable catch may be used, if preferred.

It will be understood that the ring d or any device adapted to perform the same functions, may be used with the loop g, if desired.

Having thus explained our invention, what we' claim is.-

1. In a necktie or cravat, the body A, eyelet C, catch D, ring d, and cord G, combined and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.

2. In a necktie or cravatfthe body A, hav-v ing the flap B, provided with the eyelet C, the cord G,provided with the loop m, and the IOO catch D, provided with the slot combined and arranged to operate substantially as described.

3. In a necktie or cravat, the cord G, hav-A ing a loop or noose at its upper end, in combination with shield or Hap B, provided With the eyelet C, a catch or means for securing the cord When the tie or cravat is in position for use, and means for preventing the loop or noose of the cord from being accidentally drawn through said eyelet, substantially as set forth.

4. The improved necktie or cravat herein described, the same consisting ofthe body A, flap B, provided with the eyelet C, cord G, 15 provided with the loop m and ring d, and the catch D,provided with the slotz, substantial] y as set forth.
