W. A. LAVERTY. Necktie.
No. 216,421. Patented June 10, 1879.
N.FETER$, PHOTG-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHWGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIen.
WILLIAM A. LAVERTY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WANNAMAKER 8t-BROWN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN NECK-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,421, dated June 10,1879; application filed May 1, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. LAVERTY, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scarfs; and do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of scarfs known to the trade as Open-Top Prince Tecks, and it consists in a removable and adjustable center-piece, adapted to be used with such scarfs to make the top closed and to change the wearing-surface, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a scarf with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a scarf without the attachment. Fig. 3 is a back view of the scarf with the attachment in place. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the attachment removed.
A represents a scarf of the class known to the trade as the open-top Prince Teck scarf. B represents a center-piece, made of the same kind of material as the scarf proper, and of such width that one end can be inserted into the opening at the top of the scarf. This end of the piece B is provided with a stiffener or pusher, 0, made of wire or other suitable material, and fastened to it in any desired manner, for the purpose of enabling the wearer to bring it to its proper position.
The attachment or center-piece B is then bent over the back of the scarftop, and temporarily attached thereto by a hook, D, or other equivalent means, thus closing the opening at the top of the scarf and forming a closed-top scarf.
By my, invention I produce a closed-top and an open-top scarf in one, the first named bein g adapted to a standing collar and the latter to a liedown collar.
The closed-top scarf will also wear a longertime than the ordinary scarf with closed top now generally worn, as the attachment is adjustable, and the bent-over part, which comes in contact with the chin, can be changed at will by the wearer, thereby avoiding constant wear in one place.
The attachment can easily be removed and put away when not desired for use.
. Having thus, fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an attachment for open-top scarfs, the removable and adjustable piece B, provided at one end with a stiffener or pusher, O, and at the other end with a hook, D, or equivalent fastening device, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of an open-top scarf, A, and the adjustable and removable piece B, provided with stifi'ener or pusher (l and hook or fastening device D, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing'I have hereunto set my hand this 1st day of May, 1879.
WM. A. LAVERTY.
