Description

W G BA R N E S.
Neck-Tie Shields.
No.147,743. Patented Feb. 24.1874.
f A Inventorf UNITED STATES PATENT GEEIGE.,
W'ILSEY G. BARNES, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN NECK-TIE SHIELDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,743, dated Feliuary 24, 1874; application iiled January 19, 1874.
To all whom Iit may concern Be it known that I, WILsEY G. BARNES, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented Improvements in Neck-Tie Fasteners, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my improvement in neck-tie or bow fasteners and supporters is to form on and out of the ordinary metal shield or disk a hook for a fastener and supporter for the button-loop of a common neck-band, by which a more simple, serviceable, and cheaper article is produced than has y been done heretofore. It consists in making and shaping on and out of the solid metal disk or shield of an ordinary neck-tie fastener or supporter a hook or retainer, by "which the bow or tie is attached to the neck-band.
Figure l represents a shield, showing my improvement, the saine being straightened out on a line with the face of the disk. Fig. 2 is the shield, having my improvement, inclosing the loop, bent back on the disk. Fig. 3 is the shield with the bow attached to thc same. Fig. 4 is a vertical end view of the disk.
H, Fig. l, is a part of the solid metal disk, which, together with the disk, by the one operation, is cut from brass plate, by means of a die made for the purpose, and constitutes my improvement, which is full size for practice. L is an elastic loop or ring, of the usual construction for this sort of articles. It is placed on the part `H a little above where it joins the body of the shield, and H is then bent over back on the body of the disk, and, inclosing the loop in the fieXure of the same, is pressed closely to the shield, confining the loop securely in the desired position, as seen by reference to Figs. 2, 3, and 4. P P are perforations, through which threads are passed iu the operation of confining the bow to the shield, as seen at Fig. 3.
By this method of construction, much of the machinery of the ordinary fastener is avoided, springs, points, and hook-frames being discarded.
This shield, having my fastener, is suited to all kinds of bows and ties ordinarily usedin dressing the neck, and various other furnishing goods.
The bow being attached to the shield, it is l applied to the neck in the usual manner, first putting the loop over the neck-button, and then slipping the top edge under the tips of a turn-down collar, or by attaching the shield to a tie and fastening the tie, as preferred.
Having fully described my improvement in neck-tie fasteners, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, the metal shield S, provid ed with perforations` P I), when made in one piece with the hook H, and combined with loop L, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. i
In testimony whereof I have hereuntoset my hand this 16th day of January, A. D. 1874.
YVILSEY Gr. BARNES.
