Description

(No Model.) I
M. IRMADDOX.
COLLAR FASTENER.
'N 0.'322,462. PatentedJuly 21, 1-885.
WITNESSES: I I I INVENTEJ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MILTON F. MADDOX, OEBLOOMINGDALE, INDIANA.
COHLLAR-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,462, dated July 21, 1885.
Application filed April 3, 1885. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON F. MADpoX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomingdale, in the county of Parke and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improved Gollar-Fastener and Necktie-Guard, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of collar-fastenings which are de signed to secure the collar to the neckband of the shirt at each side of the neck, and secure, also, the scarf or necktie to the collar.
The object of my improvement is to provide a device for the purpose mentioned which will not mar the outside of the collar or injure the scarf, and which can be easily applied to the shirt while on the body.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the device; Fig. 2, a side elevation showing the fastening in position, the shirt-neckband, the collar, and the necktie being shown in section. In both figures the parts are shown larger than in actual-use.
The collar-fastening consists of the springclasp a, formed of sheet metal and having one jaw serrated and turned inward in the usual well-known manner. On the back of the opposite jaw, 12, is a projection, 0, having its outer edge serrated or otherwise adapted to engage a cloth band. The piece of metal forming jaw b is made longer than the opposed jaw,
. and is turned back upon itself to form a loop,
(1, the outer part of which rests against the edge of the projection 0, thus forming asecond clasp, e.
The operation of my device as a collar-fast ener is as follows:'The collar-band f, about midway between the center and one end, is
slipped into the clasp 0 till the lower edge of the collar rests in the turn of loop (1. The collar g is now buttoned to the shirt-band, and clasp a, being held open by pressing its upper portions together, is easily slipped over and attached to the edge of the neckband j of the shirt. The collar is prevented from working up by the projection c, and is thusheld to the n'eckband between the usual points of fastening, my design being to use a pair of the fasteners, one on each end of the collar.
For the purpose of holding a scraf-necktie in place, so that it will not work up on the collar 1 form continuously with the piece formshown. My device differs from that in that it canbe easily secured to the neckband of the shirt while on the body, it does not indent the outside surface of the collar,.and it effectually secures the scarf by embracing it, instead of by sharp points entering the material of the scarf.
I claim as my invention- The herein-described spring-hinged clasp, consisting of the-two members a and b, the member a bent at right angles at one of its ends and provided with teeth, and the other member, I), having the loops dand hand teeth 0 formed integral therewith, substantially as described.
MILTON F. MADDOX.
