Sept. 1, 1925. 1,552,080
- E. J. RAINEY HAND COVERING FOR BASEBALL PLAYERS Filed Sept; 20. 1924 Patented Sept. 1, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT "OFF-ice.
EDWARD JOSEPH RAINEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO A.
e. SPALDING & 1330s.,
01 NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
HAND COVERING FO'R IBAEBALL PLAYERS.
Application filed. September 20, 1924. Serial No. 738,902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. RAINEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county and State of 5 New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Coverings for Baseball Players, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to a glove or mitt such as is used by ball players.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of means whereby the thumb and first finger are secured together in a flexible manner.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a web between the thumb and first finger which will assist in'retaining a caught ball within the glove or mitt, as the case may be. p
The invention is applicable to either a mitt or a glove.
The invention includes a web of material attached to the outer covering of the glove forming the thumb and a similar web at- I tached to that part of the outer covering forming the first finger. The two webs are joined together in much the manner of a hinge by a piece of rawhide or leather passing through both webs in the form of a hinge pintle.
I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings the most preferred form of which I am now aware, although obviously many changes will occur to those skilled in the art,
' and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the particular instrumentalities shown.
In these drawings V Figure 1 is a plan view of one embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear view of Fig.1, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of-Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, I have shown a glove having an outer cover 1 which is formed into a thumb portion 2 and a finger portion 3. Between the ends of the covering 1 forming the seam on the inside of the thumb portion I provide a Web at of ea h r or other desirable material preferably doubled upon itself and caught between the stitchings of the thumb portion. The web 4 is formed with projections 5 and depressionstherebetween.
A similar web portion 6 is caughtbetween the stitchings of the outer covering 1 which forms the finger portion To the web 6 is attached a strap 7 of leather or other suitable material as at 8, and this strap 7 passes upwardly through the projecting portions 5 of the web i and. similar parts of theweb 6 which overlap into the depressions between the projections on the web 4. The loose end of the strap 7 may be passed through eyelets 9 in each of the webs and looped around and tied in any desired manner.
7 It will be apparent that such a construction will allow the thumb and forefinger to approach each other, in which case the webs 4: and 6 act as a pivot. At the same time the composite web bridging the space between the thumb and first finger assists in retaining the ball in the glove by closing said space.
It will be evident that such a construction is advantageous, in that it produces a web which is entirely flexible, which presents a very neat appearance, and which may be made tight orloose, as the wearer may deslre. sires to undo the hinge, he may do so quickly and simply by unlacing the strap 7 and freeing the same from, the projections on the webs. the glove and nothing to be lost. This is a decided advantage. 7
I claim: I
1.'A ball players hand protector having an outer covering comprising a thumb por-' tion and a finger portion and a hinged web extending from the thumb and from the finger, and including loops in axial'alignment and a flexible pintle secured therebetween.
2. A ball p'layers hand protector having a thumb portion and a finger portion, a web comprising a piece of material doubled upon itself secured to the thumb portion, a similar web secured to the finger portion, projecting loops on each web staggered in relation to It is also noted that if the player de- Thus there is nothing to come off of the loops on. the other, and. means to fasten the two Webs together, said means comprising a flexible strip passing longitudinally through both Web portions.
3. A ball players hand protector includ- 5 ing a thumb portion and a finger portion, a
Web of flexible material secured to the thumb portion, projections at the edge of said Web comprising loops, a similar Web of flexible material secured to the finger portion, the projections on one Web straddling the projections on the, other, and a pintle passing through all of the projections.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
