- the present invention relates to apparatus for the collecting and transporting away of dust, fumes and gases in rolling mills.
- arrangements of the above mentioned type have come into use. It has however proved difficult to obtain an effective and suitable exhaust of dust, fumes and gases without the use of exhaust hoods of such dimensions and such placement that they jeopardize the attending and supervising of the mills.
- a primary object of the invention is to eliminate the above mentioned difiiculties and to make possible a more widespread use of such exhaust devices.
- the principal embodiment of the invention is characterized in that the suction boxes are located just above the path of the rolled stock and provided with a suction slot facing the path. Further, a throttling valve is arranged in the branch duct from each suction box, the valves being adapted to be automatically adjusted by means of impulses from the driving means of the mill in such a manner that the thrott-ling valve located at the discharge side of the roll stand always is open, while the other valve simultaneously is closed.
- the exhaustion point By arranging the exhaustion point close to the points where the development of fumes primarily takes place the fumes can effectively be removed by using relatively small quantities of air and in this manner the suction boxes can be given dimensions so that they do not disturb the running process. Because in reversing type mills the exhaust need be employed at one side at a time the required fan may be relatively small and this also works well for the dust separator used in the exhaust line. Therefore the plant as a whole is simple and inexpensive while simultaneously taking but little space and working elfectively.
- the suction boxes are combined with the strippers of the roll stand and are connected to the exhaust ducts by means of flexible tubes disposed at the pivot center of the strippers.
- the exhaust system may also include a dust separating device of known design.
- FIG. 1 designates a housing for a mill and 2 and 3 designate respectively two suction boxes arranged at each side of a roll stand 30.
- the suction boxes by means of branch ducts 4 and 5 and a main duct 6, are connected to an exhaust fan 20 which may include a dust separator 25.
- the suction boxes are, according to the invention, arranged adjacent the path of the rolled stock 21 and are provided with a suction slot 2a and 3a respectively, facing the path.
- the suction boxes are combined with roll strippers and 11 of the mill and are connected to an exhaust system including exhaust ducts 4 and 5 by means of flexible tubes 2b and 3b respectively, disposed at the pivot center 22 of the strippers.
- the numbers 14 and 15 stand for two lifting means, in the present instance pneumatic, for raising the strippers together with the suction boxes united thereto and for replacing the same in their proper position.
- the exhaust is carried out only by means of that suction box which at the moment is situated at the discharge side of the mill.
- the alternate connection of the suction boxes is performed by valve means, in the present instance comprising the valves 16 and 17 inserted in the branch ducts.
- the valves are arranged to be automatically adjusted by means of impulses from the driving means 26 of the mill, which impulses govern valve actuating means which in the illustrated embodiment comprise a pneumatic adjustment device 18.
- the blades of the valves are mutually displaced so that one valve is closed while the other is open.
- valves in such a manne that even when in a closed position, a small quantity of air is permitted to pass therethrough in order to obtain a slight exhaust at the feeding side of the mill.
- a device for collecting and removing dust fumes and gases in a rolling mill said mill having a roll stand for rolling stock, said device comprising a pair of suction boxes, one of said boxes being positioned on one side of said roll stand the other of said boxes being positioned on the opposite side of said roll stand, a suction slot in each of said suction boxes for facing the rolled stock and adjacent thereto, an exhaust system ineluding a pair of exhaust ducts and means to apply a suction to said ducts, one of said ducts connected to and in communication with one of said suction boxes the other of said ducts connected to and in communication with said other suction box, valve means connected to and intermediate said suction means and said ducts and within said exhaust system for selectively controlling the air flow through said ducts, valve actuating means connected to said valve means and operable to cause a suction to be drawn on the suction box associated with the side of said roll stand from which stock is to be discharged.
- suction means comprising an exhaust fan
- said device includes a dust separator in said exhaust system.
- valve means comprises a pair of air throttling valves, one of said valves in one of said ducts and the other of said valves in the other of said ducts and means interconnecting said valves and operable by said actuating means that when one of said valves is open the other of said valves is closed.
- a device in accordance with claim 2 including a roll stripper connected to each suction box, said stripper having a pivot center, flexible tubing connected between each of said suction boxes and said associated exhaust duct at the pivot center of the roll stripper connected to said suction box.
