Abstract

724,790. Electrostatic filters. RESEARCH CORPORATION. Feb. 2, 1953 [Feb. 1, 1952], No. 2886/53. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group II]. A combined mechanical separator and electrostatic precipitator comprises a common casing 10 divided up into upper and lower chambers by an intermediate gas inlet chamber 19. The gas first passes through the mechanical separator or separators, as shown cyclone separators 20, in the lower chamber, and then through the electrostatic precipitator 29 in the upper chamber, as shown by way of the outlet pipes 26 from the cyclone separators. The dust collected in the upper chamber is conveyed to the lower chamber through the conduits 39. These conduits incorporate star valves 37, actuated by rotating shafts. The collecting electrodes of the precipitator are of the hollow type in which dust dislodged by rapping is conveyed to the interiors of the electrodes. Spray devices 48, 49 are provided for humidifying and preconditioning the gas for improving collection efficiency. Baffles 28 are provided at the upper ends of the outlet pipes 26 from the cyclone separators to distribute the gas uniformly for the electrostatic precipitation stage. In a modification, the dust from the electrostatic precipitator is received in a hopper system separate from that receiving the dust from the cyclone separators but the hopper systems lead to a common hopper, and the dust conduits from the precipitator do not pass through the gas inlet chamber 19, but down the side. In a further modification the hopper systems are completely separate. In another modification a common hopper for the precipitator and the cyclone separators is provided with a liquid sump, and the dust conduits from the precipitator chamber 19, but lead to a common shoot which by-passes the gas inlet chamber 19.
