OF MONTICELLO, INDIANA.
BILL AND POSTER HOLDER.
ESPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,274, dated \Iune 10', 1884.
Application filed March 10, 1884. (No model.)
T0 at w/wm, it may coltcerit:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM 1-1. LIGH'IY, a Citizen of the United States, residing at Monticello, in the county of White and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Bill and Poster Holder, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the ac companying drawings.
My invention relates to a device for holding bills, posters, dodgers, &c.; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character which shail be cheap and simple in its construction, and one to which the bills may be readily attached or detached from.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide improved means for retaining the clamping-plate in a raised position while the posters or bills are being placed beneath the same.
A further object of the invention provides improved means for holding the clampingplate in contact with the iower strip to which it is attached.
Vith these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of my invention, showing the same attached to a frame for containing the cards of business-houses, in connection with which it is preferably used. Fig. 2 is a central transverse section. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the clainping-strip and spring-wires, the same being detached from the base-strip.
In the accompanying drawings, in which iike letters refer to corresponding parts in the several figures, A, represents a base-strip, which is provided near its upper edge and near the corners with perforations for the passage of screws or equivalent fastening for securing the base-strip to the wall or other object.
13 represents the clampingstrip, which is substantially triangular in crosssection. The front portion of this clamping-strip may be made ornamental by forming it with Ft iliOld' .ing, as shown in Fig. 1.
At each end of the clamping-strip A are provided downwardly-proj eoting l0ops,which are twisted or bent at their lower ends to form eyes 0, the upper ends of said loops being socured in grooves or recesses formed upon the ends of the said strips. These loops are attached to the base-strip by means of wires passing through the eyes thereof, which are attached to the base-plate at one end and secured to the clamping plate or strip A at the other-that is, the wire-awhich is attached to the base-strip at one end, is secured to the clamping-strip at-the other end of the same, which for convenience we will letter f. The wire 9 is attached to the end f of the basestrip, and crosses the wire 6, and is secured to the end of the clamping strip. It will thus be seen that a strong and serviceable spring is providedone that is not liable to get out of order, and one which will securely hold the clamping-strip in close contact with the base-strip.
At about the center of the clamping-strip, and upon the upper edge of the same, is provided an upwardly-projecting pin, i, which is adapted to engage a spring-plate, j, secured upon the upper edge of the base-strip, and provided with a perforation, it, to receive said pin.
Upon the iowerfront side of the base-strip A are provided pins 7, which are adapted to receive the bills or posters, and which register with perforations or recesses formed upon the under side of the clamping-plate, whereby the said posters or bills are securely held upon the same.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that my device is appiicahleto various uses as, for instance, it may be used as a clamp for holding curtains, or may be used as a splasher-holder. However, in using the device for holding posters, 820;, the same is preferably attached to a frame, as shown in Fi g. 1, which contains the business-cards of various establishments.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a suitable basestrip, of a spring-pressed clamping-plate pro vided with means of attachinent, substantially as shown, and triangular in cross-section, one of the points of which forms the fulcrum upon which it works, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a suitable basestrip, of a spring-pressed clampingplate triangular in cross-section, having a pin projecting upwardly from its upper edge. and a spring-plate provided with a perforation secured to the base-strip, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a suitable basestrip, of a spring-pressed clamping-plate, triangular in cross-section, provided with a pin upon its upper edge adapted to engage a perforation in a spring-plate secured to the basestrip, pins projecting outwardly from the lower end of the basestrip to engage perforations 0r recesses formed upon the under side of the clamping-plate, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with a suitable base, of a clamping strip having depending loops formed with eyes secured at its ends, wires secured to the opposite ends of the base-strip at one end and to the ends of the clampingstrip at their other ends, substantially as set- V forth.
\VILLIAM HENRY LIGHTY.
