Description

No. 850,245. PATENTED APR.16, 1907. F
E. M. NEWALD.
ADJUSTABLE TA B GUIDE CARD. APPLICATION FILED JULY 25, 1996.
, UNITED STATES PA ENT OFFICE.
-- EDWARD M. NEWALI), or GILLETT, WISCONSIN. 4
Specification of Letters Patent.
ADJUSTABLE-TAB UIDE-CARD.
Patented April 16, 1907.
' .1 Application and July 25,1906. sa-a1 No. 327,624]
To will whom} it may concern;
' {Be it known that I, EnwAnD residing in'Gillett, in the county of Oconto and State of Wisconsin, have invented new Referring to the accom anying drawings,
' in which like characters reference indicate tion.
tion of the guide-card and its adjustable tab shown in Fig. 1.
In the drawin 's, 6 represents a guidecard, which isjwilihout the usual permanent tab at its upper edge and is provided with a series of regularly-spaced perforations 7 in-; stead, which perforations extend from one. end of the card to the other and at a short distance from the upper edge.
d b e frame 8,
The adjustable tab is forme which preferably consists of a plate of sheetmetal bent upon itself toform an inverted-U shape in cross-section and to embrace the upper edge of the card 6 between its lower edges, as shown in Fig. 4. The frame isprovided with a short opening 9 on its face and an 0 I osite lo er o enin 10 on the reverse si e,
P e g and a strip 11 0 cardboard or other material is held in the bend at the up er edge of the frame, so as to show throug the opening 9 and disclose a name or other character marked thereon. The object of the longer 0 ening 11 in the back of the frame is to fa- (1113311613116 removal of the strip 11, so that it may be turned end for end or reversed to provide new s ace for other names or index characters. e frame 8 is adapted to be moved along the upper edge of the card 6, the
M. NEWALD;
lower ed e of strip 11 riding-on the upper edge of t 1e card,-and spring-tongues 12 are struck up from the front part of the frame and have rounded rojections 13 formed at their ends to enter t 1e openings 7 of the card,
' the two projections 13 being spaced apart the distance between the said 0 enings 7 With a guide-card prov ded with an adjustable tab of this construction the tab may quickly be moved from place to place and will be securely held i1 its adjusted position,
the rounded projections 13 yielding to force when the tab is pushed to one side or the other and again springing into-openings 7 in the new position of the tab, where it is held thereby against accidental displacement. When it is desired to change'the name or other designation on the tab,it is only necessary to slide the strip 11 out of the frame by engaging it through the opening 10 in the back and replacing'it in a different position, either changing it end for end or reversing it. With this invention the change of the tabs of a card-index system made necessary by the insertion of a new class can be quickly accomplished without removing the index-cards from their place by simply forcing the tabs along the cards to their newpositions.
It is obvious that the particular construction herein set forth is not essential for carrying out this invention and that many modifications within the scope of the claims may be made therein. 1 What I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
- 1. A guide-card having openings therein, and a tab movably mounted on the card and provided with means for engaging the openings for holding it in its adjustments.
2. A guide-card provided with a, series of openings along its edge and a'tab slidable on the edge of the card and having spring means for engaging the openings to holdit in its adjustments.
3. A guide-card having openings therein, and a tab formed by a plate of sheet metal bent upon itself to embrace the edge of the card and provided with spring-tongues struck up therefrom with projections thereon for engaging the openings in the card.
4. A guide-card having openings therein, a tab formed by a plate of sheet metal bent upon itself to embrace the edge of the card In testimony whereof I affix my signature and provided with spring-Longucs struck up in presence of two wltnesses. I
therefrom with rounded projections for en- I 1 i gaging the openings 1n the card, and a renlov- I EDWA {D N PT able strip locnltod in the bond of the plate Witnesses: v and containing an index character showlng HERMAN BAER,
through an opening in the plate. BENJ. M. GOLDBERG.
