ADDISON v. SANFORD, or ELMIRA, ASSIGNOR To FREDERICK DIETZ, or
' NEW YORK, ANDS. W; ooUviN, or MIDDLETOWN, NEWYORK.
BLACKlNG-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,677, dated March 25, 1884'.
` Application tiled November 9, 1883. (No model.)
To all whoml it may concern/.- Y Beit known that I, ADDISON V. SANFORD,
of Elmira, in the county of Chemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blacking-Boxes. of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Myinvention relates especially to boxes used for containing shoe polish or blacking, and has for its object the provision of a device simple and cheap to,construct, and wherein means are employed for holding the box by ahandle and raising or lowering the cover Without soiling the ingers. l
My invention consists, essentially, in a box constructed of Sheet met-al and provided with a cover of thesame material; a handle, made of a singleV piece of wire having bends therein, is arranged to engage with the ends of a Wire cover-holder, also made in a single piece, and having a projecting thumb-piece for raising the cover or lid; and my invention also involves certain other novel and useful combinations or arrangements of partsand peculiarities of construction and operation, all of which will be hereinafter rst fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure lis a plan View Of my improved blacking-box, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3'1's a vertical Sectional view at line m w of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 Shows the improved box as provided with a set-screw and having an ordinary blah-kingbox secured therein.
Like letters of reference, wherever they occur, indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
The special advantages of my box will be readily understood. The box may be securely held in the hand, and the cover raised there- `from or returned thereto by a simple movement of the thumb, all danger of soiling the hands is overcome, and no trouble will be ex- 4 perienced in always keeping the blacking` securely covered against drying out and gathering dirt.v The box may be made of any ap# proved size, and blacking placed directly therein; or large sizes may be employed, the cover 5 being removed from the ordinary box, the box being placed in my improved box and securely held against movement by a set-screw or equivalent mechanism.
A is the box, made of sheet metal in any 5 approved manner. B is a handle, constructed of a single piece of wire and secured to the box, as shown. At b the wire of the handle is doubled over upon each side,i`ormingsockets, i into which the extremities of the hinge-wire 6l C extend, wire C being affixed to the cover D and provided vvith a thnmb-piece, E.
Fig. 4 shows a box constructed in accordance with my invention, and provided with a set-screw, F, adapted and arranged to hold an 6l Ordinary blackingbox, G, securely in place, the cover thereof being removed.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to Secure by Letters Patent, is- 7( The box A,cover D, handle B, havingbends b therein, and cover-holder C, having ends b and bearing thumb-piece`E, the whole combined and arranged `to operate Substantially as shown and described. 75
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.`
