Be it known that I, ROBERT C. Tnoms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Patchogue, Suffolk county, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brush-Holders, of

which the following is a full, clear, and" exact specification.

My invention relates to improvements 1n detachable holding means, and the same has for its object more particularly to provide a simple, efficient and inexpensive holder for supporting brushes and other devices suspended from the edge of a can or receptacle.

-Further, said invention has for its object to provide a detachable holder which will readily accommodate itself to the curvature is attached thereto.

Further, said invention has for its object to provide a detachable holder which may be easily attached to or removed from a receptacle or container.

The brush engaging device comprises a pair of pivoted jaws 19, 19 having their outer ends provided with flaring portions 20, 20', respectively, to facilitate the insertion of a brush handle or other device therebetween. The jaws 19, 19 are respectively provided with corresponding lugs or ears 21, 21 provided with registering apertures through which extends the post 16 of the attaching member. 22 denotes a coil spring disposed upon the post 16 intermediate the ears or lugs 21, 21 and having its ends bearing against the rear ends or finger portions 23, 23 whereby to maintain the aws in spring-pressed relation with each other. The apertures 21, 21' in the lugs or ears of the jaw member 19" are squared and engaged by thesquared portion 17 of the post 16, so as to hold said brush engaging device, as a whole, against rotation upon said post without interfering with the operation of said ears thereon.

The operation of the device will be obvious. It may be observed, however, that by reason of the peculiar formation of its attaching member my holder may be easily and quickly applied to or removed from a receptacle or container regardless of its size and shape, and that when applied to a receptacle it permits of the brush or other device being supported thereon with its to con form to the inner surface of a receptacle, a spring member extending downof the body portion, anda brush holding member mounted upon the supporting memher, substantially as specified.

2. In a device of the character described, in combination, an attaching member formed of a'singtle piece of wire bent to form a triangular ody portion intermediate the ends thereof, the apex of the triangular body portion being uppermost, one of the ends of the wire being bent outwardly from the apex of the body portion and then inwardly to form a loop, said end being then bent downwardly to form a spring member co-acting with the body portion to grip the wall of a receptacle with the loop embracing the edge thereof, the other end of the wire being bent inwardly from the apex of the body portion and then upwardly to form a of the spring supporting member, and a brush holding member mounted upon the upwardly extending portion of the supporting member, substantially as specified.

3. In a device of the character described, in combination, an attaching member. comprising a body portion, a spring member co-acting therewith to grip the wall of a receptacle, and a supporting member hav-' ing an upwardly extending portion having a squared end, and a brush holding member mounted upon the upwardly extending portion of the supporting member and having a squared aperture engaging the squared end thereof, whereby the brush holding member is held against rotation upon the supporting member, substantially as speci- Signed at the city of New York, in the county and State of New vYork, this 4th day of November, one thousand nine hundred and fourteen.
