Description

J. E. MITCHELL.
LAMP CHIMNEY HOLDER. APPLICATION man MAR. u. I914.
1,225,990. Patented May15,1917.
JAMES E. MITCHELL, OF PINE HILL, KENTUCKY,
LAMP-CHIMNEY HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 1917.
Application filed March 11, 1914. Serial No. 824,002.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES E. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pine Hill, in the county of Rockcastle, State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp- Chimney Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to lamp chimney holders.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a lamp chimney holder which will permit of easy application and removal of the chimney to and from the burner and which will hold the chimney against accidental disengagement from operative position with respect to the burner.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a lamp chimney holder which can be easilyassociated with an ordinary burner, and which will be simple in construction, eflicient in use, and which can be manufactured at a comparatively small cost.
Vi ith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of refer-. ence denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a burner with the improved chimney holding means associated therewith and showing a lamp chimney secured in place upon the burner by said means,
Fig. 52, a section 011 the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 8, a perspective view of a portion of the holder showing how same is constructed from a single length of wire. and
Fig. 4, a bottom view of the burner showing the manner of anchoring the arms of the holder to the burner.
Referring to the drawings A indicates a lamp burner of ordinary construction and including the usual lamp supporting flange 10. Secured to the burner A is a chimney securing finger 11 of the usual construction,
said finger being anchored to the burner on the bottom thereof as at 12.
The improved chimney holder is shown as comprising sections B and C, the former being formed from a single length of spring wire the terminals of which are anchored to the under side of the burner A as at 13 and are then carried upwardly to form arms ll and 15 having substantially the contour of a lamp chimney, the lower ends of the arms 14 and 15 being flattened as at 16. The upper ends of the arms 14: and 15 are bent to form a substantially U-shaped portion 17 disposed in a plane at right angles to the planes of the arms 1 and 15 and having a contracted mouth portion. The U-shaped portion 17 is provided centrally with an offset portion 18 for a purpose that will presently appear. The section C of the holder is also formed from spring wire and has its lower end anchored to the bottom of the burner as at 19 and its upper end twisted about the offset 18, said upper end terminating in an arm 20 directed away from the Ltshaped portion 17. It will of course be understood that the section C follows substantially the contour of a lamp chimney- It will be further understood that the finger 11 is positioned midway between the arms 14: and 15 and in line with the section C.
In applying a chimney to the burner A the lower end of the chimney is engaged upon the flange 10 inwardly of the finger 11 with the upper end of the chimney grasped in the hand. The upper end of the chimney is then caught between the arms of the U-shaped portion 17 until the chimney is disposed entirely between said arms when the latter will contract at their outer ends and secure the chimney in place. To remove the chimney it is only necessary to pull the upper end of the chimney toward the free ends of the arms of the U-shaped member 17. If difficulty is experienced in disengaging the chimney from the U-shaped member 17 the arm 20 may be grasped so as to permit of a stronger pull. being exerted upon the chimney without possibility of damage to the holder.
What is claimed is 2- A. chimney holder comprising in combination with a lamp burner, a continuous wire length forming a pair of legs having their ends secured to the burner, and a chimney engaging yoke at the upper ends of the legs, said yoke consisting of forwardly extend 'ing spring fingers formed by bending the intermediate portion between the legs for- 5 Ward horizontally to the letter and doubling the remainder rearwardly to form a closed loop behind the legs, a socket formed centrally of the loop, a third leg secured in said socket and having its lower end secured to the burner, and a handle formed on said 10 third leg thereby to steady the holder upon removing a chimney.
In testimony whereof, I afliX my signature, in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
JAMES E. MITCHELL. Witnesses r r A. B. FURNISH,
S. F. BOWMAN.
