PHILIP D. FOSTER, OF WELD, MAINE.
LAMP-CHIMNEY HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 1913.
Application filed April 23, 1912. Serial No. 692,635.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP D. Fosrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at l/Veld, in the county of Franklin, State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Chimney Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in lamp chimney holders.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a device which will at all times retain a lamp chimney upon a burner without any possibility of becoming accidentally knocked off and consequently broken.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which will permit of a lamp chimney to be easily attached to or removed from a burner,
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which is extremely simple in construction, and is cheap to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claim hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details ofconstruction within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lamp showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the holder, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view showing the connecting means employed with the lamp engaging band.
Like reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, A designates a burner of ordinary construction and B a lamp chimney. My invention comprises a lamp chimney holder which is designated as a whole by the reference letter C. This holder consists of a chimney encircling band 5 which is preferably formed of flat metal and consists of arcuate sections 6-6, said sections being hingedly connected as at 7.
The free ends of these sections are disposed in overlapping relation and carried by the free end of one section is an outwardly projecting headed button 8 which is adapted to project through a longitudinally disposed slot 9 formed in the end of the outer face. This slot is of tapering formation, the walls thereof tapering toward the end of the sections. The inner end of the slot is of a size so as to receive the button 8 so that upon the insertionbf the button 8 and by a pull upon the two sections, the shank of the button will be caused to be seated within the smaller end of the slot 9.
Secured to each section 6 is the upper end of one or more depending supporting wires 10, each wire being bulged intermediate its ends in conformity with the shape of the chimney B. The lower end of each wire 10 is inwardly bent to form a foot 11 which is connected with the lamp burner A by solder or other suitable means.
It will thus be observed that by this means the chimney will be not only held against becoming accidentally disengaged from the burner A and by means of the supporting wires 10 the chimney will be guarded to a considerable extent against being accidentally broken.
When it is desired to detach the chimney B for any cause whatsoever, the overlapping ends of the sections 6 are shifted so that the button 8 will be disengaged through the opening 9. The sections 6 may then be swung outwardly on the hinge 7, and by this means the chimney B may be readily disengaged from the burner.
l/Vhat is claimed is:
A lamp chimney holder comprising in combination, a chimney embracing band formed from strap metal and medially hinged, a locking element on each end of the band, a plurality of spaced resilient supporting arms secured at their upper ends to the band and the-lower ends of said arms inwardly directed to form attaching means,
said band adapted to embrace the upper end of a chimney.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
PHILIP D. FOSTER.
Witnesses:
