PORTABLE WIRE FENCE POST.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 18.1907.
* Svwentoz Wihwaozz m 55% I f I v WILLIAM B. STAMBAUGH, OF WOODSBORO, MARYLAND.
PORTABLE WIRE-FENCE POST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1907.
Application filed June 18, 1907. Serial No. 379,588.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM B. STAM- BAUGI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVoodsboro, in the county of Frederick, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable I/Vire-Fence Posts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in portable wire fence posts and it particularly comprehends a portable base, a fence post detachably seated thereon, braces between the fence post and the base and clamping elements carried by the post for engagement with the strands of wire constituting the fence structure.
In connection with a fence post constructed generally as above described, the invention has for its object to provide a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, the details of which will appear in the course of the following description, in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings formin a part of this specification, like characters of reference designating similar parts, throughout the several views, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the manner of use of a post constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section taken through the base of the post.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates the base and the numeral 2 the post proper. The base 1 is constituted of an oblong block and is formed centrally thereof with a socket 3 in which the lower end of the post 2 is received. The said post is provided at its sides with suitable wire clamps and holders 4 to receive the ends of the strands of wire forming the fence structure and the clamps 4 include means for regulating the tension of the wire. The base 1 carries at the ends thereof rigidly held hooks 5 which have their bills engaged through the looped lower ends 6 of the braces 7. The upper ends of the braces 7 are looped as at 8 and are engaged with hooks 9 having threaded shanks 10. The shanks 10 are engaged in sockets 11 swiveled upon pivoted stems 12, the latter being provided at opposite sides at the upper end of the post 2. Thus when the post 2 is engaged in the socket 3 it is firmly seated by rotating the swiveled sockets 11 to take up the slack of the braces 7. The posts 2 and their adjuncts thus constructed may be disposed at any suitable and desired intervals. The fence post constructed in accordance with the present invention is simple in its structural details, inexpensive to manufacture and practical and efficient in use.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that simple and efficient means are provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements herein shown and described are well adapted to serve the functions set forth, it is obvious that various minor changes may be made in the proportions, shape and arrangement of the several parts, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
In combination with a fence post base and a fence post having a seating thereon centrally thereof, hooks carried by said base at opposite ends thereof, turn buckles hung pivotally from the upper end of said post at opposite sides thereof, hooks having threaded shanks and forming a part of said turn buckles and braces connecting said turn buckles with said respective first named hooks, said braces each comprising a rod formed at its ends with eyes for detachable engagement with said respective hooks.
In testimony whereof, I affiX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
WVILLIAM B. STAMBAUGH.
