To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MELVILLE LOFTIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of I-Iildreth, in the county of Edgar and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Rests; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure lot the drawings is a front view of broom with rest in raised position. Fig. 2 is a front view of broom with rest in extended position, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view in detail of the rest proper.

This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in broom rests, the object being to providea simple and inexpensive device adapted to support a broom in such a manner when not in use as to prevent injury to the splints thereof, caused by reason of the fact that they are made to support the weight of the broom when the latter is rested upon the floor in the customary manner.

A further object is to provide a device of this character designed to be permanently attached to a broom, and capable of being readily supported on the handle out of the way when the broom is in use, and as readily returned to its useful position, the device be ing of such a character as not to add materially to the weight of the broom.

With these objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention it will be observed that the rest consists of the two upwardly converging legs A, A, the transverse oval loop B, connecting said legs, somewhat above their central portions, the circular ring or loop 0 uniting said legs at their upper ends, the vertical arm D projecting upwardly from said ring, and the oblique ringE at the upper end of said arm.

The device is formed from a single piece of wire bent at its central portion to form the ring E, the two parts of the wire being brought together and preferably twisted upon each other to form the arm D; thence separated from each other and bent to form the ring 0. The two portions of the Wire are lapped by each other for about one half the circumference of the ring 0, said portions being bent downwardly at the extremities of said lap to form the upper portions of the legs A, A, which leave the ring at substantially diametrically opposite points. Said legs diverge from each other as they extend downwardly to the loop B, which is formed by bending that portion of the wire forming the leg A at g transversely and laterally over to the leg A, forming one half of said loop, interlocking said wire with an eye or bend it in theleg A, and thence bringing it back to its original side, passing it through the bend at g, and continuing it downwardly to form the lower portion of the leg. The rings 0 and E are passed over the handle of the broom with the legs extending down one at each edge, and the loop B embracing the body of the broom, as shown in Fig. 2. The weight of the broom comes upon the legs A, A, which hold the splints from contact with the floor.

When it is desired to use the broom, the device is merely pulled up on the handle, the obliquity of the ring E, and the spring character of the lapped ring D, holding the device in this position.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A broom rest consisting of the legs A, A, the transverse oval loop B, adapted to encircle the broom and the rings adapted to receive a broom handle, substantially as specified.
