Ndom/ ,4. fur/7e! Patented May 25, 1948 UNITED PATENT OFFICE 2,441,982 BROOM Naomi A. Kiln liner, Detroit: Ai i iica i n seiiiemtei 2 ,18 6, erial No seas The inventionrelates generally to niopabrooms a d e l ke dmqre. pa ti ula ly t n a a h m n which sa a e to be'arp di ihe l r, end of the handle of a broom, mop or similar implement to serveas a stand whereby the lower portion of the broom; mop or the like will be elevated or raised from thefloor thereby preventing the straws of the broom from becoming bent by the wi ghtof the broom.
An important object of the invention is to pro'-' vide an inexpensive, durable and simple attachment which can be applied to a broom handle or the likeland including legs which hold the" lower end of the broom raised above the floor so that thebroommay stand alone. p
Another object of the invention is to provide means for holding the legs in an out-of-the-way position while the broom is being used.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a hand gripping device to facilitate raising and lowering of the legs of the stand.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a top plan view of the invention applied to a broom;
Figure 2 is a front its lowered position;
Figure 3 is a side elevational view;
Figure 4 is a sectional View taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2 and with the broom removed;
Figure 5 is a, fragmentary sectional view of one of the legs of the stand;
Figure 6 is a front elevational view of the invention as applied to a broom in a raised position, and V Figure 7 is a sectional view taken on the line 'l'--'I of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a handle of a broom, mop or similar implement which is constructed of wood, or other suitable material and the numeral elevational view thereof in 6 indicates the straw body of the broom, said body being secured to the lower end of the handle in any suitable manner.
Secured to the lower portion of the handle 5 is a bracket 1 comprising a horizontal fiat surface 8 with an upwardly projecting ring '9 attached to said surface over a hole 8a formed therein. The fiat surface 8 is rounded off at H) and extends 4 Claims. (01. 248-210) downwardly toil I wher the ends" l2 of the bracket ire turned inwardly and spaced slightly from the opposite sides of the broom body. 7 A rivet [3' extends through the ring 9' and the lower end of the handle and the heads [4 of the rivet arth'enfiattened'or upset. I
Kbroombody-encircling band It is formed with fourholes I6 and" isheld horizontally under the en s I? of the bracket 1 and secured thereto in i any suitable manner.
A'yertically' slidable ring handle'and to which a pair of spring biased clasps l8" and [9- are pivotally attached at the opposite sidesef the broomhandl-e.
A' pair of inverted Ui-shaped legs 20v are positiohed at opposite sides of the broom bOdyin-L eluding a cross-bar 2| at their upper end curved inwardly from the vertical axis of the legs and are welded or otherwise suitably secured to the ring H.
The lower ends 22 of the legs are placed through the holes 16 in the body encircling band l5 for vertical sliding movement therein.
A hand grip or knob 23 projects from one side of the ring I! which afiords an easy means for raising the ring l1 and legs 20. The legs are held in a raised position by the clasp I8 engaging an upper clasp retainer 24 which is fastened upwardly from the lower end of the handle.
When it is desired to support the broom in an upright position so that the body is raised from the floor the clasp I8 is disengaged from the clasp retainer 24 and lowering the legs 20 to engage the clasp IS in a lower clasp retainer 25 fastened to the broom handle below the clasp retainer 24.
A rubber foot 26 is internally threaded and is secured on each lower end 22 of the legs to prevent the stand from slipp a lso t p ev t the legs from being pulled out of the body encircling band I 5.
To place the device on a broom handle the ring 9 is slipped on the handle and secured adjacent its lower end with the body encircling band l5 positioned around the body of the broom. The rivets i3 secure the bracket and the body encircling band in a fixed position on the broom handle.
The slldable ring I! with the legs 20 and the clasps I8 and I9 attached thereto is then slipped over the upper end of the handle and lowered so that the ends of the legs. extend through the holes I6 of the body encircling band. The clasp retainers 24 and '25 are then fastened to the sides of the broom handle at a point for engagement by the clasps I8 and I9, the clasp I8 supporting the stand in its raised position when it is desired I"! is positioned on the It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a pre- I,
ferred embodiment of the invention the same is v susceptible to certain changes fully compre- V hended by the spirit of the invention as herein de scribed and the scope of the appendedclaims.
What I claim as my invention is: a
1. A broom stand adapted for attaching'to a" broom handle and comprising a broom b'o'dy enl circling band, a bracket'carried by the broom handle and secured to the band, a ring slidable on the broom handle, a set of legs carried by the ring and slidable in the band, and means for holding the legs in vertically adjusted position relative to the broom. v
2. A broom stand adapted for attaching to a broom handle and comprising a, broombody encircling band, a bracket carried by the-broom handle and secured to the band, a ring slidable on the broom handle, a set of legscarried by the ring and slidable in the hand, upper and lower clasps carried by the ring, upper and lower clasp retainers fastened to the handle for engaging therespective clasps, and manual gripping means on the ring for raising the legs to engage the upper 35 1,008,104
ering the legs to engage the lower clasp with the lower clasp retainer.
3. A broom stand adapted for attaching to a broom handle, and comprising a broom body encircling band, a bracket connecting the band to the handle, a ring slidable on the handle, a pair of inverted U-shaped legs attached at their upper ends to the ring, said band including guide means slidably receiving the legs, and means adjustably connecting the legs to the handle to secure the legs in a raised or lowered position relative to the broom body.
4. A broom stand adapted for attaching to a broom handle, and comprising a broom body encircling band, a bracket connecting the band to the handle; a ring slidable on the handle, a pair of, inverted U-shaped legs mounted on opposite sides of'the broombody and attached at "their upper" ends to the ring, said band including guide means slidably receiving the legs, upper and lower clasps carried by the ring, and upper and lower clasp retainers fastened to the handle for engagement by the respective clasps to secure the legs in a raised or lowered position relative to the broom body.
