L. GAZVODA SHOVEL SEAT Filed April 27, 1934 ...mllllHl V 'IlHHU Patenta& Oci. 9, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SHOVEL SEAT Louis Gazvocla, Soutlview, Pa.
Application April 27, 1934, Serial No. '722,644
4 Claims. (CI. 155-78) My invention relates to improvements in portable seats and more particularly to a seat attachment for shovels and other similar tools.
It is an object of the invention to provide a portable seat which may be readily attached to a conventional shovel, on which a person may sit when the shovel is rested against a wall or other suitable support' A further object of' the invention is to provide a seat of the above-mentioned character which is simple and durable in Construction, eificient in use and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the' accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specication and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, i
Fig. 1 is a. side elevation view of a shovel showing my invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the seat,
Fig. 3 is an enlarged bottom plan View of the same,
Fig. is a section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3,
Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 3, and,
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary side elevation view of the attaching bracket, showing the serrated edge.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration, I have shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5, denotes a conventional shovel, in its entirety, having the usual handle 6 and blade 7.
The seat consists of a rectangular board 8 which is detachably secured to the shank of the handle 6, by the attaching bracket 9. The bracket 9 is formed from a steel rod bent intermediate its length to form the loop 10 adapted to embrace the shank'of the handle and covering the bight portion of the loep is a rubber sleeve 11 which rictionally Contacts with the shank and holds the loop in place. The ends of the rod extend orwardly from the loop in diverging relation to form arms 12 having their ends 13 bent to extend across the bottom of the board 8. The end 13 of one of the arms 12 is pivotally connected to the bottom of the board 8, by the metal strap 14 Secured to the bottom or" the board, by screws 15. The end 13 of the other arm 12 is releasably connected to the board by the spring clip 16 attached to the bottom thereof, by screws 17, the clip having spring jaws 18, which resiliently engage the end of the arm when the board is swung downwardly. When the shovel is leaning against a wall, as shown in Fig. 1, and the seat is attached to the shank of the handle, the seat is disposed on a horizontal plane at substantially right angles to the blade 7. The
arms 12 of the attaching bracket extend across the upper edge of the blade and have their lower edges serrated as, at 19, for engagement with the upper edge of the blade to prevent the seat from slipping. i
In use, the seat isapplied to the shovel, by first detaching the free arm of the bracket 9 from the spring clip 16, to permit the bracket to straddle the shank of the handle 6, with the loop 10 embracing the shank just above the upper edge of the blade 7. The board 8 is then swung down bringing the spring clip 16 into engagement with the free arm of the bracket and the seat is then ready to be used.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that certain changes in the shape, size and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:-
1. In a portable seat, the combination with the handle and blade of a shovel, of a U-shaped bracket adapted to embrace the handle of the shovel and rest on the upper edge of the blade the lower edges of said bracket having Serrations for engagement with the upper edge of the blade and a board supported by the free ends of said bracket.
2. In a portable seat, the combination with the handle and blade of a shovel, of a U-shaped bracket adapted to embrace the handle of the shovel and rest on the upper edge of the blade the lower edges of said bracket having Serrations for engagement with the upper edge of the blade, and a board detachably connectedto the free ends of said bracket.
3. In a portable seat, the combination with the handle and blade of a shovel, of an attaching bracket formed from a rod having a loop intermediate its ends adapted to embrace the handle of the shovel, arms extending forwardly from said loop across the upper edge of the blade and resting thereon, the lower edges of said arms having serrations for engagement with the upper edge of the blade and a board supported on said arms.
4. In a portable seat, the combination with the handle and blade of a shovel, of an attaching bracket formed from a rod having a loop intermediate its ends adapted to embrace the handle of the shovel, arms extending forwardly from said loop across the upper edge of the blade, the lower edges of said arms having serrations for engagement with the upper edge of the blade, a board pivotally attached to one of said arms and means detachably connecting said board to the other arm.
