MILKING STOOL.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in milking stools embodying means for supportingthe milk pail during the milking operation.

The primary object of the present invention is to provide a stool of the above kind which is extremely simple and durable in construction and by means of which the milking operation may be facilitated without danger of the milk pail tilting over under ordinary conditions.

Another object is to provide the stool proper with simple and effective means for supporting and retaining the pail in proper position in front of the occupant of the stool when in use.

Other objects will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, and

the same consists in the novel form, combi nation and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.

Referring more in detail to the drawing, the present invention embodies a seat boar 5 supported in a horizontal position at the required elevation by means of a pair of runners 6 arranged longitudinally of and at the sides of the seat board.

The runners may be formed of strips of metal or strap iron with their ends respectively secured to the ends of transverse cleats 7 secured to the underside of the seat board 5 at the rear end and adjacent the forward end of the latter, the horizontal ground engaging portions of the runners projecting forwardly beyond the forward end of the seat board for a purpose which will presently become apparent.

A horizontal support is secured to and projectsforwardly from the forward vertical end Cportions of the runners below the seat boar 5, and this support preferably grammes a Ti "16 U-shaped strap a which as its ends at aehed to the runners:

The forward forward end of the seat board is recessed as at 9 so as to partially embrace the milk pail 10 when placed upon the support 8, and means is provided to releasably retain 'the pail in place upon said support. As

shown, this means embodies a rod 11 vertically slidable through the seat board 5 at the forward end of and intermediate the sides of the latter, the upper end of said rod being formed to provide a hook 12 engageable over the upper edge of the pail. The rod 11 is yieldingly urged downwardly by means of ahelical spring 13 which surrounds the same between the seat board and a nut 14 adjustably threaded on the lower end of the said rod. By means of the nut, the tension of the spring may be properly adjusted for causing the hook 12 to engage the pail firmly so that the latter may not be accidentally displaced.

It will be seen that the forward ends of the runners project forwardly at opposite sides of the pail disposed on the support 8 so that tilting of the stool is prevented under ordinary conditions, and as the pail holding means including the hook 12 retains the pail substantially stationary with respect to the stool proper, tilting of the pail and consequent loss of its contents is rendered unlikely.

The rod 11 is formed with a loop 15 adjacent hook 12 and above the seat board, and this loop is adapted to be engaged by the finger for facilitating manual raising of the rod 11 if desired to release the hook d 12 from the pail. Also,'the loop 15 engages the seat board to limit downwardly sliding movement of the rod 11.

In use, the stool is so placed as to position the pail properly for receiving the milk during the milking operation, the user being seated upon and straddling-the seat board while facing toward the pail.

From the foregoing. description it is believed that the construction and operation as well as the advantages of the present invention will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art.

What I claim as new is:

1. ranged longitudinally of and at the sides of the latter, said runners comprising strips of metal having upright end port-ions secured at their upper ends to the under side of the seat board at the ends of the latter, said runners having return-bent intermediate portions providing horizontal ground engaging members which project forwardly beyond the forward end of the seat board and beyond the forward upright end portions of the runners, and a pail sup sort mounted on the forward upright end portions of the runners below the seat board and at the forward end of the latter.
