STOO L.
Application filed January 14, 1920. Serial No. 351,429.
To all lb/ 107M it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALFRED L. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thomaston, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to seats for work tables, benches, counters and the like and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved seat which can be held in any desired adjusted position towards and away from said work table, benches and the like and adjusted in height according to the size of the persons using the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide animproved stool or seat for work benches which can be readily placed at inoperative position under the table and held in such position and readily removed and held in operative position in spaced relation to said table.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved seat rotatably mounted upon their standards extending from the table top to the floor, this standard supporting an adjustable collar having a ratchet face which is adapted to be adjusted longitudinally of the standards to hold the seat in various adjusted positions, said ratchet face permitting the seat to be swung on the same and held in any desired position.
A. still further object of the invention is to provide a work table seat of the above character, having a standard supporting the seat and a foot rest extending outwardly from the standard directly below said seat.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the above character, which is durable and efiicient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof in which:
Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of the work table provided with my improved attachment.
Figure 2 is a plan View of the improved means. 7
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical section through the supporting standards and seat, showing the means for holding the seat in a position in relation to the table.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 generally in dioates the improved seat which can be used in connection with a work table 2 of ordinary or preferred construction including the top 3 and the usual supporting legs L. The device includes a cylindrical supporting standard 5 having its terminals secured in suitable supporting collars 6, which are secured by screws or the like to the inner surface of the table top and the upper surface of the floor. The standard has slidably mounted thereon a sleeve 7 which is adapted to be held in any adjusted position on the standard by means of a thumb or set screw 8. lhe upper surface of the collar 8 is provided with a ratchet face or teeth 9 which are adapted to mesh or match with the teeth formed on the lower surface of the head 11 which is slidably mounted on the standard. The head 11 has extending outward therefrom the arm 12, the outer surface of which extends tangentially from the head. The arm 12 curves inwardl as at 13 and ends substantially in alignment with or in advance of the head 11. The outer end of the arm has secured thereto in any preferred manner the seat 14. By raising or lowering the collar 7 the height of the seat can be readily regulated and by slightly raising the head'll so as to bring the teeth formed thereon out of mesh with the teeth formed on collar. The head is then rotated on the standard so as to position the seat in any desired place. The curvature of the arm permits the seat to extend outwardly from the standard and the same is positioned on the arm in such a manner, as not to interfere with the legs of the user. If so desired, an arm can be positioned on the standard so as to extend outwardly therefrom in the opposite direction.
The standard 5 has also slidably mounted thereon below the seat 14 a foot rest attachment 17 which includes a collar 18, slidably mounted on the standard supporting an outwardly extending arm 19, on which a plate 20 constituting the foot rest is secured at the outer end thereof. The collar 18 is held in adjusted position by suitable set screw 21.
From the foregoing it can be seen that an improved stool or seat is provided for Work tables which can be readily and quickly adjusted to various heights of persons and held in relation to the table.
In practice, I have found that the form of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings and referred to in the. above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efficient and practical; yet realizing the condition concurrent with the adoption of my device, will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention as set forth.
lVhat I claim as new is 1. A stool device in combination with a table top, consisting of a standard disposed intermediate the top and the floor and constituting a support for the top, said standard being substantially cylindrical, a foot rest adjustable rotarily and longitudinally of the standard, a fastening member to bind the foot rest rigidly to the standard, a sleeve adjustable longitudinally of the standard, a securing member to bind said sleeve rigidly to the standard, a seat on said standard movable rotarily and slidably thereon, and interengaging teeth on said seat and the upper edge of said sleeve, and said foot rest and seat adapted to be folded inwardly and below said top.
2. A stool comprising, in combination with a work table, a standard secured at its upper end to the underside of the table top and at its lower end to the floor, a seat, an arm to the outer end of which the seat is secured and which has its inner end rotatably and slidably mounted upon the standard to permit the seat to be vertically and horizontally adjusted with respect to the table top, means cooperating with the standard and arm to secure the seat in adjusted position, a footrest, an arm to the outer end of which the footrest is secured and which has its inner end slidably and rotatably mounted upon the standard to permit the footrest to be adjusted horizontally and vertically with respect to the seat so as to be positioned directly beneath the seat or forwardly or rearwardly beyond the seat at any vertical distance from the plane thereof, and means cooperating with the footrest carrying arm and the standard to secure the footrest in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED L. DAILEY.
