Description

' 1,008,104. I Patented Novfi, 1911.
RODNEY W. BALL, OF PURCELLVILLE, VIRGINIA.
BROOM-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 13, 1911.
Patented Nov. *7, 1911. Serial No. 620,797.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RODNEY WV. BALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Purcellville, in the county of Loudoun and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Broom-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to broom supports and particularly to a device constructed to permit of its convenient engagement with any well known form of broom and which will operate to support the weight of the broom head to prevent the straws at the effective sweeping end of the broom from being distorted or twisted under the weight of the head of the broom, the object of the invention being to provide a device that is adjustable to permit of its attachment to broom heads of different sizes.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a broom showing the broom support applied thereto and adjusted so as to be exposed beyond the effective sweeping end of the broom. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the broom. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the broom engaging member. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the prop or support.
The broom support comprises a broom engaging band 1 which is preferably constructed from a single length of spring wire or other suitable metal or material. This band is preferably in form of an elongated loop of a configuration to fit around the head of the broom as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. The terminal 2 of the band has an eye 3 therein. The opposite terminal 4. of the band is scalloped or corrugated, at 5, so as to present a series of locking corrugations which are adapted for interchangeable locking engagement with the eye 3 of the band. From this construction the band may be attached to broom heads of different sizes. The metal from which the band is made is sufiiciently stiff to permit the notches 6 and the eye 3 to be securely held together and retained in their adjusted positions.
The portion 7 of the band is formed with a pair of suitably spaced eyes 8 in which the legs 9 of the prop 10 are engaged and adapted for vertical adjustment. The prop 10 is substantially of inverted U-form, the lower ends of the legs 9 being flared outwardly in opposite directions from each other so as to provide a relatively broad support, and as illustrated, these legs are slightly pointed, at 11, for efiective contact with the surface on which they are placed. These legs are fluted or corrugated, at 12, for interchangeable locking engagement in the eyes 8. The prop 10 is formed of suitable springy material and under normal tension of the material the legs 9 are expanded or extended from each other for efiective locking engagement with the eyes 8. The portion 14 of the prop 10 is designed to be grasped by the hand when it is desired to adjust the prop 10 vertically on the broom head.
After the broom has been used, the prop 10 is adjusted manually so as to cause the lower ends of the legs 9 to be extended below the efiective sweeping surface of the broom so as to wholly contact with the surface on which the broom is to be supported.
I claim:
1. A broom support comprising a band adapted to be adjusted around the head of the broom, a prop adjustably supported on the'band, and means on the band and prop respectively cooperating to hold the prop in its adjusted position.
2. A broom support comprising an adjustable band adapted to embrace the broom head, the said band being provided with an eye portion, and a prop adjustable on the band and having a corrugated portion extending through the said eye portion of the band.
3. A broom support comprising a band adapted for attachment to the broom head and provided with spaced eye portions, and a prop adjustable on the band and having a corrugated portion extending through the eyes of the said band and adapted to be engaged therewith to hold the prop in its adjusted position.
4. A broom support comprising a band adapted to embrace the broom head and In testimony Whereof I affix my signature provided on one of its terminals with an in presence of two Witnesses.
