UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES LUTTED, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
COMBINED CANDY-PAIL AND SHOW-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,346, dated June 21, 1887.
Application filed June 3, 1895. Serial No. 167.490. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JAMES LUTTED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain newand useful Improve ments in a Combined Candy-Pail and Show- Case, of whiehthe followingis a specification.
The object of myinvention is to provide the means for protecting candy from dust and flies, and at the same time act as a convenient show-case.
It consists of a pail having the larger portion of the top covered. with transparent ma terial permanently secured thereto, and the remaining portion of thin sheet metal or other opaque material, the metallic portion being hinged so as to act as acover and prevent the straight edge of the glass from cuttingor injuring the hands while taking out the contents, by which construction the. candy n ay be easily got at when required, all of which will be fully and clearly hereinafter shown, described, and clai1ned,by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 represents a side elevation.
In said drawings, a is an ordinary pail, a the usual bail or handle secured to the pailears a in the well-known way. The top a is of glass or other transparent material. It is secured to the pail by means of the thin metallic angle-plates c 0 -0 which are riveted or secured by screws to the pail in the usual way. The bent portion 0 of these plates lap over and hold the glass securely to the pail, as shown. The glass plate covers only a portion of the top. clean and free from flies while exposing it to View, so that the contents of the pail will be clearly seen. A thin metallic cover, e, covers the remaining portion of the top of the pail.
It is hinged by means of the loops 0 and pivots 6 The pivots are formed by a wire running the whole length of the straight side of the cover 6. (See Fig. 1.)
In using the device the cover is thrown clear back, as shown by the dotted lines 6 in Fig. 2.
The smooth rounded edge of the straight side of the cover protects the hand from the edge of the glass while taking out the contents of the pail.
I claim as my invention A pail provided with the usual bail, a, a transparent top, a, permanently secured thereto, and a'pivoted sheet-metal cover, 0,
Its object is to keep the candy having the wire forming the pivots the whole length of the side of the cover and opposite the edge of the glass, as and for the purposes described.
JAMES LUTTED.
