To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR M. LEWIS, a citizen of the. United States, and a resident of Moundsville, in the county Aof Marshall and State of 1V est Virginia, have made certain' new and useful Improvements in Display Boxes and Trays, of which the follow ing is a specification.
-My invention is an improvement in dis` play boxes, and consists in 'certain novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed. t
The object of the invention is to provide a lov.Y priced, convenient, and compact coinbination of box and display tray for use in packing goods, which are intended to bedisplayed by the retailer, in the original boxes as received from the .maimfacturenN A further obgect is to provide a. device of such simplicity that-V it cannot. get out of order, inexpensive enough to be applied to the cheapest box and at the saine time so coniplete that it may be used with the most elaborate and costly creat-ion of the box makers skill. i
Referring to the drawingsI forming a part hereofFigure l is a perspective view of the box with the tray removed; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the tray in place, of a box havingl a sliding cover; Fig. B is a longitudinal section of a box having a modified form of Isupporting device tor the tray and the ordina ry form ot' cover; liig. 4. is a perspective view ot' the box shown inl Fig. 3 with the Fig. is la similar view of .a tray provided with another modified form of securing device.
The present embodiment of the invention comprises a box 1, which may be of any desircti construction, and nsupplied with a siiding lid 2 as .renown in Fig. 2, or with the usual form of cover 3, shown in Fig. 3.
The tray consists of a bottom 4t having ends 5 and sides t3, which are connected at their corners as at 7 in any suitable manner, and at one end the tray is provided with an angular clip S fitting against the end and the bottom thereof, the said clip being provided at each end with an overl'ianging .flange 9, 10, the fiange 10 passing' through the bottom of the box and overlying the upper face thereof as shown in Fig. 1.
At approximately7 the center of the bottom of the tray the ends of a plurality of straps 11 are secured as at 12 and the other ends of the straps are secured to the end of the box remote from the clip as at- 13. The straps 11 areiiexible, and may be made vof any suitable material and are of such forni a loop, one of whose ends is engaged with the box as at 15, extending through openings 16 in vthe end thereof, the other end 17 extending through openings 14 in the bottom of the tray as shown in Fig. 2. The
ends and 17 prevent withdrawal of the.l cord, and the cord 1s of sutiicient length to vforni a support for the end of the box remote from the clip in the samelnanner as the straps.
In the construction shown in Fig. 3, a; clip supports one end of the box,.and a cord 1S is passed through spaced openings 19 at approximately the center of the tray, over the end of the box remote from the clip, and
through spaced openings 2,0 in the end of the box, the ends of the cord being connected as at Q1. The clip shown in Figs. 3 and et is a wire, doubled upon itself to form an open loop whose body portion is bent over to 't'orm an overlying lug 22 for engaging the end pf the box, and the ends of the loop are passed through the bottom of the tray and bent over on to the surface thereof as at 23. In this construction the cord answers the same purpose asI the straps shown in Fig. 1, and the cord shown in Fig. 2.
In Fig. 5, the clip S- is made use of, and
Ialso the straps 11 as shown in Fig. 1, but
the ends of the straps instead of being secured to the end of the box are provided with clips 24, each of which is provided with an'overhanging flange 25 for engaging the end of the box.
In the use of the device, the tray may be packed with a display or sample layer of goods, and may be supplied With fancy paper trimming, pictures, advertising matter, or price card. Then a sale is made, the tray is elevated out of the box and moved to one side thereof and the goods sold are taken from the body of the box, after which the tray is replaced the contents thereof remaining undisturbed. v i
