Q. a w
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT M. BARKER, OF SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA.
DEVICE FOR PACKING PBUNES.
Application filed. November 21, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT M. BARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Packing Prunes, of which the followis a specification.
My invention relates to a device for packing prunes, in which said prunes are packed and pressed into shape, after being pre pared for packing and shipping. The objects of my invention are:
First, to provide a device for packing prunes that will form the prune package of the proper dimension when pressed therein to meet the requirements of a paper boX in which the prunes are shipped to market.
Second, to provide a device for packing prunes that will open from the sides and ends for thepurpose of quickly releasing the package from said device.
Third, to provide a device for packing prunes that will permit of the display layer of prunes being placed at the bottom thereof, in such a manner that said display layer will appear at the top of a paper boX in which said prune package is shipped to market.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device for packing prunes showing in dotted lines alternate positions of front, side, and ends thereof.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing my prune packing device containing primes packed therein, ready for removal therefrom to a paper box receptacle for shipment.
Fig. 8 is a sectional end view of my prune packing device.
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of my prune packing device showing fastening thereof.
Fig. 5 is an end view showing in dotted lines alternate position of ends and sides.
Corresponding and like parts are referred Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 31, 1917.
Serial No. 132,617.
to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference numerals.
My improved device for packingprunes forming the subject matter of the present invention is principally designed for packing prunes into shape preparatory to placing the package of prunes thus packed into a paper box receptacle for 'shipment to market.
My device for packing prunes is made of wood or any other suitable material comprising a bottom piece 1 of the proper length, breadth, and thickness having a rear side piece 2 being hinged at 3; said hinges 3 being fastened to said bottom piece 1 and said rear side piece 2 by a plurality of screws 3*, said rear side piece 2 being adapted to open outward.
Hinged to said rear piece 2 by hinges 4c are end pieces 5, said hinges 4: being fastened to said rear piece 2 and said end pieces 5 by a plurality of screws P, said end pieces 5 are adapted to open outward as shown in Fig. 1, and outward and upward as shown in Fig. 5, for the purpose of releasing said prunes packed from said device for packing prunes.
The front longitudinal side pieces 6 are shown fastened to end pieces 5 in any suitable manner, and are held in place when closed by hasp 7, and staple 8, by inserting staple pin 9 into staple 8; said hasp 7 being fastened to said side piece 6 by a plurality of screws 7*.
Clasp 10 is shown fastened to end pieces 5 in any suitable manner the lower end thereof being bent at right angle adapted to engage the underside of bottom piece 1 when closed for operation. This clasp 10 prevents the ends and sides from rising upward when prunes are being packed in said device.
A paraifined paper lining is shown at 11, covering the entire inside of said packing 100 device before the prunes 12 are placed therein. This paraflined paper 11, is for the purpose of protecting prunes 12 from dust, and to protect the paper box in which said prunes are shipped from any sweating of 105 said prunes 12.
I do not wish to confine myself as to size of my device for packing prunes, as the same may be made of any size as to the package required thereof.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a device for packing prunes the combination of a bottom piece, a rear side piece connected to said bottom piece, end pieces, said end pieces being connected to said rear side piece adapted to open out-Ward, for the purpose of releasing the primes packed; front side pieces, said front side pieces being fastened to said end pieces in any suitable manner, the same being adapted to open outward for the purpose of releasing the prunes packed, means for holding said front side pieces together when said device is closed, clasps, said clasps being fastened to said end pieces, the lower end of said clasps being bent at right angle, adapted to engage the under side of said bottom piece, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two subscribing; Witnesses.
ALBERT M. BARKER.
