INVE TUY:
PERCY E. WHITE, 0F MANSFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS. I
DISPLAY-MOUNT FOR BOTANICAL OR OTHER SFECIMENS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Nov; is, 1916.
Application filed June 22, 1916. Serial No. 105,262.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PERCY E. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield, county of Bristol, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Display-Mounts for Botanical or other Specimens, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of the invention is to furnish a mount and case with a transparent frontthrough which the specimen can be readily seen and with sufficient space between the card on which the object is mounted and the transparent front so as not to mutilate the specimen, and also to provide means by which the specimen is tightly sealed within the case to prevent insects from gaining access to the specimens.
The invention will be fully understood when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features thereof will be pointed out and clearly defined in the claim at the close of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section of the case taken on the same line as Fig. 2 but before the card or slide on which the specimen is mounted is inserted and with the sealing flap turned back. Fig. 4 is a section of the card or slide and specimen mounted thereon before it is inserted in the holder. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the slide with a specimen mounted thereon before it is inserted in the holder. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section on line 66 of Fig. 3.
Referring now to the drawings, the specimen 1 is mounted on a suitable cardboard 2 which will be referred to as the slide. Across the upper front face of the slide 2 is secured a strip 3 of wood or other suitable material for the purpose to be hereinafter described.
The holder for the mount comprises a back 4, a glass front 5 and the spacing strips 6, 7, 8 respectively for the two sides and bottom to space apart from each other the back 1 and the glass front 5, thus forming a hollow chamber 13 between the said transparent front and said back. The said spacing strips are secured to said front 5 and back 4; preferably by glue or some other suitable adhesive composition. The sides and bottom of said front and back and spacing strips are also preferably covered with binder strips 9 which are adhesively secured to the outside face of the strips 6, 7, 8 and lap over on to the outer face of the back 4 and front 5.
Each of the strips 6, 7, 8 is formed with an offset portion which thus produces a groove 10 between each of said strips and the back l, thus forming a groove guideway into which the card mount 2 may'slide by inserting the card into the open top of the holder when the holder stands in the position shown in Fig. 8, and the cross strip 8 previously mentioned is of sufficient length so that it will serve as a filler to close the upper end of the space between the front and the back.
Preferably the cross strip 3 has mitered ends 1 1 and the upper ends of the offset portion 15 of the side spacing strips are miteredwhere they are engaged by the mitered ends 14: of the top cross strip 3.
Secured to the front face of the glass 5 at its upper end is an adhesive strip 11 having a flap portion 16 which, after the slide 2 is inserted in the holder, is folded over the top and laps down on to the upper part of the back l, the adhesive being moistened before the said flap is folded over so that it will firmly adhere to the top edge of the cross strip 3 and the back 4. This completely seals any cracks between the filler 3 and the glass front 5 and the back 4:, the sides and bottom having been already tightly sealed by the binder strips 9.
The space in the chamber 13 between the front face of the card or slide 2 and the glass front 5 which is equal to the thickness of the offset portion 15 of the spacing strips is sufficient to receive the specimen 1 without crushing it. The offset portion -15 of the spacing strips forms one side of the groove 10 while the back 4 forms the other side of the groove so that when the slide or card 2 is inserted into the holder the slide is in the back partof the chamber, against the back t, thus economizing the space in front for the benefit of the specimen.
The binder strips 9 for the sides and bot tom are all sealed at the time the device is constructed. The flap portion 16 of the sealing strip 11 is the only portion of the adhesive strips which is left to be sealed at the time of use.
Preferably a tab 17 is attached to the cross strip 3 for convenience in withdrawing the slide 2 from the holder w ien it is desired to mount the specimen. This tab however should be detached when the slide is put back into the holder after the specimen is mounted before the sealing mp1s is folded over and sealed.
W' hat I claim is:
A display holder and mount for botanr V cal and other specimens comprising a holder having a back, a transparent front, side and bottom spacing strips between said front and back, binding strips at the sides and bottom of said holder which lap over onto the front and back, a sealing lap secured at one edge to one face ofthe said Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing holder and having a gumined flap extension thereof, in combination with a slide to which the specimen is to be attached, the spacing strips and the back being constructed to form grooves to receive said slide, said slide having a filler strip crosswise thereof at its upper end which closes the upper end of the space between the slide and the transparent front When the slide is inserted in the holder, the said. sealing flap being adapted to be folded over the upper end of the slide and filler and adhesively secured to the other face of the holder.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, 111 presence of tWo witnesses.
