A TTORN E Y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B. SI-IUCK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IVIOTTO-BANNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters lPatent No. 715,884, dated December 16, 1902 Application filed September 4, 1902. Serial No. 122,053. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. SHUCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a newand useful Motto- Banner, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to banners which are usually employed for decorative or advertising purposes; and my object is to produce an article capable of showing a Variety of beautiful combinations in both color and form at a comparatively low cost and which may be disposed in many different positions and takendown and packed away for future service by an unskilled person, the same being fully described hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a banner suspended in one of the usual positions to exhibit a motto or advertisement thereon, and therein is embodied my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a portion of what is shown in Fig. 1, but on an enlarged scale, to plainly illustrate suspehsory strips and manner of attaching the banner thereto. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of a portion of the assembled parts shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a portion of one of lthe suspensory strips.
Similar numerals indicate throughout the several figures.
In the manufacture of this banner several layers of thinsheet material-' such as 1, 2, 3, and 4, Fig. 2-form a'pile, which'is secured together by means of a tape or strip 5. Near the upper margin of the pile is made a series of transverse slits 6, and in the suspeusory strip S are transverse slits 7 in registry with slits 6 in the pile. The strip 5 is threaded like parts back and forth successively through the registered slits and when drawn tight serves to closely hold the pile of material composing the banner together, as is illustrated in Fig. 2.
After the pile of material 1, 2, 3, and 4 is bound in the manner above indicated the letters, characters, or whatever forms the motto or advertisements are to be are stamped upon the outside sheet with a thin dye which penetrates the several layers, and the pile is afterward numerously slitted, as shown in Fig. 2 at 9, when if it is hung as in Fig. 1, the thin material will Yassume various positions and present a beautiful eect, the letters composing the Words showing irregularly but easily read.
I claim as my invention- 1. A motto-banner comprising a series of pieces of thin material'superimposed face to face, secured together longitudinally at one edge and slitted transversely nearly across the material and characters disposed on the face thereof for the purpose stated.
2. A motto-banner comprising a series of pieces of thin absorbent material superimposed face to face and secured together longitudinally along one edgevportion, forming a pile, characters made in one of the outer faces of the pile with a thin pigment which is partially absorbed by the under layers of the materials and the pile afterward numerously slitted transversely across the pile as and for the purpose stated.
In testimony whereof I have signed my Yname to this specification in the presence of witnesses.
. v. WILLIAM B. SHUCK. Witnesses:
OSCAR SNELL, THEO. C. KonssnL.
