` MAKE-UP AND sPoNGE CONTAINER Filed July 2l, 1945 Patented May 28, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE MAKE-UP AND SPONGIEI CONTAINER James L. Younghusband, Chicago, lll.
Application July 21, 1945, Serial No. 606,381
1 claim. (Cl. 132-82) My invention relates to a combination make-up and sponge container.
Facial make-up which is used today by many women in place of dry loose powder is formed in a compact cake, packed into a container. In using facial make-up thev user employs a wet sponge which she rubs across the cake and then applies to her face. The sponge being wet is difcult to carry separately. It is impossible to leave the wet sponge on top of the cake-because the cake will absorb moisture from the sponge and become sloppy, messy and unusable. This has forced users to leave their facial make-up at home where they can keep the sponge on a shelf adjacent the make-up. This is unfortunate because most women desireto use such make-up one or more :times during their stay away from home. Under present conditions this is not possible. Y
It is among the objects of this invention to solve this problem by providing a case thatwill enable the user to carry her make-up and sponge with her. My device will provide a separate chamber for holding the sponge so that it will be available at all times and will not moisten or ruin the cake make-up. My device is also small, compact, easy to carry, simple and pleasant to use and has such other objects, advantages and `capabilities as will later more fully appear and which are inherently possessed by my invention.
While I have shown in the accompanying drawing preferred embodiments of my invention, yet it is to be understood that the same are susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Referring to the drawing, Fig. 1 is a top plan view ofv one embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a sectional vi'ew on line d--fl of Fig. 2.
An embodiment selected to illustrate my invention in Figs. 1-4 comprises a container I0 holding a cake of make-up I I. The container I has screw threads I2 adapted to be engaged by screw threads I3 on cap I4, so that the cap may be removably attached to the container I0.
The cap I4 extends above the open top of container l0 leaving a space 1I therebetween. The
her pocket or purse for future use.
cap I4 has a depressed body portion I5 extending within said space 'Il providing a recess I8 within which is removably housed a sponge I1. A hinged cover I6 permits access to said sponge I1.
The users of my device may carry the same with' them in their purses or pockets. When the user needs to apply make-up, she merely opens the cover to the sponge chamber and removes the sponge. She adds water to the sponge (or it may be housed with moisture previously added), rubs the sponge across the make-up cake and then applies the same for use. When she finishes, she merely returns the sponge to the sponge chamber, closes the cover, and places the container in In this wal7 she need not carry a separate sponge, which being wet and containing make-up would be diicult to carry. The sponge with my device is always available for use and is neatly, conveniently and safely carried in the sponge chamber where it is out of contact with and cannot mess up the make-up cake when not in use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: i
A make-up and sponge container comprising a base member having a closed bottom, open top, screw threaded side walls, and a hollow interior adapted to hold a compact make-up cake, a cap having outer side walls with a threaded lower portion adapted to removably engage the screw threaded side walls of said base member, said outer side walls of said cap continuing upwardly beyond said base member leaving space between said base member and said cap, said Cap at the upper ends of its outer side walls extending integrally inwardly to form the :top portion, then extending downwardly within said space just short of the top of the base member and then extending inwardly to provide inner side walls and a oor defining a depressed chamber, an a cover hinged to the top portion of said cap and extending ush with said top portion in closed position, to close said chamber, said chamber adapted to hold a wet sponge, said floor and said sidewalls of said chamber adapted to hold said wet sponge from undesired contact with said compact makeup cake.
JAMES L. YOUNGHUSBAND.
