Application March 19, 1947, Serial No. 735,586
6 Claims.
The present invention relates to containers and particularly to a multiple compartment container which may be used, for example, for nail polish and accessories for the use thereof.
It is well-known that nail polishes are easily chipped off from fingernails by contact with a hard surface resulting in the marring of the polish and the spoiling of the effect thereof. In order that repairs may be made it is customary for persons to carry separate bottles of remover and polish, together with the accessory devices to apply these fluids. Considerable inconvenience is occasioned in carrying the articles in separate containers as one or more of the articles may easily become misplaced.
An object of the invention is to provide a container of such construction that it combines in a single unit the necessary materials for removing and/or applying liquid nail polish or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a small, neat, compact and ornamental unit suitable for carrying in a ladys handbag.
In accordance with the invention, the foregoing objects are accomplished by providing a unit adaptable for use as a nail polish touch-up kit including a compartment container to hold the fluids for removing the old polish and for providing the new polish. together with a compartment for the accessories used in applying the fluids to the fingernails.
The touch-up kit is advantageous to use in that the container is self-supporting and may be placed on a level surface Without hazard of its tipping over and spilling the contents of the compartments. The outer casing adapts itself to be i made in an attractive design and so has sales appeal. Further, by reason of the compact design a minimum of space is occupied by the kit.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description and from the accompanying drawing which shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a nail polish touch-up kit in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the kit shown in Fig. 1 taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of a modified form of device in accordance with th invention taken along the line 3--3 of Fig. 6.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of another modified form of device in accordance with the invention taken along the line 4--4 of Fig. 7.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1 with the cover removed.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the device shown in Fig. 2 with the cover removed.
Fig. 7 is a plan view of the device shown in Fig. 3 with the cover removed.
Referring to Fig. 1 there is shown a nail polish touch-up kit I in accordance with the invention comprising an intermediate section 2 with means adapted to separately store nail polish and nail polish remover or the like, an upper section 3 adapted to cover the intermediate section, and a lower section 4 adapted to provide with the intermediate section a compartment for the storage of accessories for applying the fluids. The touch-up kit is preferably made of a moldable plastic mate rial, although, if desired, it also may be made of metal or other suitable materials.
The intermediate section 2 shown in Fig. 2 comprises a body member 6 of oblong or oval cross-section. A peripheral rib 1 is formed on the outer wall of the body member 6 at a position approximately at the mldsection thereof. The bottom wall 8 is substantially flat. The body member is divided by a partition wall l2 to provide a larger compartment ID for nail polish remover and a smaller compartment II for nail polish, as shown in Fig. 2. The top wall El is formed with upwardly extendin nipples l4 and I5 threaded 0n the outer surfaces thereof to receive threaded closure members It and I 1. C10- sure member I1 is provided with a brush applicator l9 cemented or otherwise attached to the inner surface of the closure member to apply fluid stored in the compartment I I.
The upper section 3 is formed with a top wall 20 or oval shape and a flange wall 2| of a length to abut against the rib I when the upper section is in position over the intermediate section 2, and
1 to provide ample clearance between the inside of the upper section and the tops of closure members It and I I. The rib 1 projects from the side oi the body member 6 a distance equal to the thickness of the flange wall 2| so that a smooth outer surface results.
The lower section 4 is made similar to, and may be interchangeable with, the upper section 3. The lower section 4 is formed with a flat bottom 22 of oval shape and a flange wall 24 of a length to abut against the rib 1 when in position on the bottom of the intermediate section 2. When the lower section 4 is in position on the intermediate section 2 a, space 25 is provided between the bottom wall 8 of the intermediate section and the bottom 22 of the lower section.
This space is available for the storage of cotton, emery boards, orange sticks, cotton-tipped applicators, or the like. The space between the upper section and the top of the intermediate section may also be used for storage.
A modified form of touch-up kit in accordance with the invention is shown in Fig. 3. In this kit, the upper and lower sections are as previously described, the intermediate section being varied in construction so that a space is provided to receive a separate cylindrical container for the nail polish. Occasionally during the use of a kit, the nail polish becomes dried up and is practically impossible to remove. By this construction the liquid polish container may be discarded and replaced with a new container. In this form the intermediate section of oval cross section is provided with a peripheral rib 3| as previously described. A flat bottom wall 32 extends across the member to provide a floor for compartments 34 and 35. The top wall 31 is formed with an upwardly extending nipple 39 which is threaded to receive a closure member 40. A wall 38 separating the two compartments is curved as shown in Fig. 6 to provide a concave surface for the inner wall of the compartment and a convex surface for the inner wall of compartment 34. The compartment 35 is thus adapted to receive and frictionally retain a cylindrical container 4| without waste of space. The container M may be provided with a closure member 42 to match the closure member 40.
In another modified form of touch-up kit in accordance with the invention shown in Fig. 4, th intermediate section is constructed as previously described excepting that a pair of open-ended compartments 5| and 52 are provided to receive separate containers or bottles 54 and 55. The container 55 for nail polish is preferably cylindrical while container 54 for the polish remover is preferably oval and of greater capacity. This form is advantageous in that both of the containers for the nail polish and for the nail polish remover are replaceable. The intermediate section 50 has a peripheral rib 56 and a bottom wall 51 as previously described. A partition wall 58 is formed with a section having thickened sides to provide walls of concave section for both of the compartments 5| and 52 which are thus adapted to snugly receive and frictionally hold the containers 54 and 55.
From the preceding description it will be apparent that a multiple compartmented container adaptable for use as a nail polish touch-up kit has been provided in a single unit, and which is small, neat, compact and ornamental.
While the invention has been described and illustrated with reference to specific embodiments thereof, it will be understood that other embodiments may be resorted to without departing from the invention. Therefore, th forms of the invention set out above should be considered as illustrative and not as limiting the scope of the following claims.
