CONTAINER AND APPLIER Filed July 18, 1939 INVENTOR MQW ATTORNEY Patented May 20, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE CONTAINER AND APPLIER Arthur M. Griiiis, Youngstown, Ohio Application July 18, 1939, Serial No. 285,118
3 Claims.
This invention relates to a combined container and applier and. has as its principal object the provision of a package adapted to contain polish or wax and the like and provided with a lid portion which is in the form of a convenient applier.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a package adapted to contain polish or wax and the like, the lid portion of which forms a convenient applier and which is provided with gasket means so as to form an air-tight lid for the package.
The container and applier shown and described herein has been designed to form a compact and efficient package for various polishes and waxes wherein the lid portion of the package is eliminated and a conveniently shaped applier is sub-- stituted. The applier is formed with an annular groove around its outermost edge .which carries a round rubber gasket which is maintained in the annular groove by its own elasticity and serves as an effective air seal when the applier is positioned in the container.
The container portion comprises a cylindrical shape closed at its bottom and adapted to receive the applier at its top. Suitable polishes and waxes may be positioned in the container where they are readily available to the applier.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the polish container and applier in closed position.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the container portion of the device in which the polish or wax is positioned.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the applier portion of the device showing in detail the round rubber gasket and its positioning on the applier.
By referring to the drawing it will be seen that the polish container and applier comprises a container portion l, preferably circular as shown and preferably formed. of metal. This container 1 is provided at its upper edge with an outturned flange 2, and on its lower sides with a plurality of annular ribs 3. Positioned within the container is an applier comprising a suitable shaped handle portion 4 having an annular groove 5 formed around its largest portion. A round rubber gasket 6 is positioned in this annular groove 5 where it will remain without additional fastening due to its elasticity. The applier is also provided with a felt pad 1 which is afiflxed to the bottom thereof in such a manner that it forms a practical dauber for applying polishes or waxes. It is obvious that a sponge rubber pad may be substituted for the felt pad.- if desired, or that this portion of the invention may be Varied to suit the material package.
It will be seen that the shape of the applier portion of the device corresponds with the shape of the container portion and that the out-turned flange 2 of the container enables the applier portion to slide readily within the container portion where the round rubber gasket 6 serves to insure its air-tight positioning and yet permit it to be moved inwardly and outwardly of the container at will. It will also be seen that the plurality of annular ribs 3 formed on the lower portion so that the container may be conveniently held in one hand and the applier held in the other.
It will thus be seen that the container and applier shown and described herein forms an attractive, practical package for various polishes, waxes and the like and that it combines the usual separate package and applier articles into a single device, capable of economic manufacture, and convenient to use. The seal provided by the gasket 6, which gasket is resiliently but tightly received within the cylindrical portion 1 of the container, prevents the material in the bottom part of the container from drying out and this material may thus be maintained in usablecondition for long periods of time. The cylindrical portion l of the container is of uniform cross-section throughout that portion of its longitudinal extent which is normally engaged by the gasket and the seal is therefore effected when the container is filled to its proper level as well as when the container is substantially empty. As shown in the drawings the dauber l is of slightly less diameter than the diameter of the seal 6 so that the dauber when dried or caked will not interfere with the proper operation of the gasket.
What I claim is:
1. A package for polishes and the like comprising a cylindrical container open at its top and closed at its bottom, an out-turned annular flange formed around its upper edge so as to provide for the easy entranceof an applier which forms a closure for the said package, the said applier comprising a handle, an annular groove around the largest portion of said handle, a round rubber gasket positioned in the said annular groove together with a suitable dauber afiixed to the said handle.
2. A combined container and ap plier for polishes and the like comprising a cylindrical container closed at its bottom and open at its top, an out-turned annular flange on its side, the said open end of the said container adapted to receive in a slidable manner an applier comprising a conveniently shaped handle provided with a suitable dauber, an annular groove in the said applier around the outer edge thereof, an elastic gasket positioned in the said annular groove adapted to slidably engage the inner cylindrical surface of the said container.
3. Apparatus of the character described comprising in combination a member having a generally cylindrical portion, a gasket encircling said portion, a dauber secured to said member on one side of said gasket, a handle secured to said member on the side of said gasket opposite said dauber, said member adapted to be received Within a cylindrical portion of a container with the outer periphery of said gasket in yielding engagement with the inner surface of said container portion, said container portion being of uniform crosssection throughout its longitudinal extent normally traversed by said gasket in the operation of the apparatus.
