(Cl. 132-79) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A cosmetic containing and applicating device in which an elongated support having a plurality of elongated recesses therein is slidably carried by a tubular base. Removable cosmetic containing trays and an applicator are carried within the recesses and a cap member overlies the support and a portion of the base when the device is not in use.
This invention relates to cosmetic devices suitable for several uses such as eyebrow producers, lip liners, eye shadow appliers, mascara appliers and the like.
Among the objects of the present invention, it is aimed to provide a cosmetic device which includes an ingredientcontaining tray, an applier such as a brush, a support for the tray and applier and a container for the several parts, the basic devices of which can be converted with facility for use as an eyebrow producer, a lip liner, an eye shadow producer, a mascara applier and the like which is compact and can be readily carried by a user in a cosmetic handbag and the ingredient or ingredient-containing tray of which can be readily replaced.
These and other features, capabilities and advantages will appear from the subjoined detailed description of specific embodiments thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is an elevation of one device.
FIG. 2 is an exploded view of said device.
FIG. 3 is an enlarged view partly in section of the device shown in FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is a transverse section still further enlarged as compared to the size of FIG. 3 on the line 4--4.
FIG. 5 is an elevation disposed at right angles to the view of FIGS. 2 and 3 showing the entrance of the slot in the support with a part of the container.
FIG. 6 is an elevation similar to FIG. 5 and substantially at right angles to the view of FIGS. 2 and 3 showing the brush in position in the support with the free edges of the bristles of the brush disposed in a line inclined to the axis of the brush adapted for use as an eyebrow producer or liner.
FIG. 7 is an exploded view of the unit as shown in FIG. 5.
FIG. 8 is an exploded view of another embodiment of the device showing the free ends of the bristles of the brush in a line vertical to the axis of the brush suitable for use as a lip liner or eye shadow applier.
FIG. 9 is an elevation of 'a brush where a spiral composed of bristles is used suitable for use as a mascara applier.
FIGS. 10, 11 and 12 are side elevations of three other embodiments usin-g felt instead of bristle tips.
In the embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 7 inclusive there is illustrated an outside container consisting essentially of the main container unit 1 having an outwardlyextending annular rib 2 adjacent the free edge 3 thereof. The container 1 is essentially cylindrical. The portion 4 between the free edge 3 and the rib 2 has an inwardlyextending projection 5 and a plurality of outwardly axially extending projections 6 preferably three in number substantially equally spaced from one another as shown in FIG. 4.

The portion 7 of the container consists of 'a cap open at one end to telescopically fit on to the portion 4 frictionally held in place by the ribs 6 as shown in FIG. 2.
In the base 1 of the container there is provided the sup port or holder 8 composed of a plastic material such as acetate, butyrate or styrene or of a metal such as steel. This support 8 has a recess 9 at one side and a further recess 10 to receive a tray rather shallow as shown in FIG. 8 by the edge of the tray 11 which is similar to the tray used in the embodiment of FIGS. 1 to 7 inclusive.
If the unit is to be used as an eyebrow marker or liner, then the ingredient 12 in the tray consists essentially of a compressed cosmetic powder treated with a suitable coloring agent to satisfy the user.
On the other side of the support there is shown a third recess 13, see FIG. 6, to receive the brush 14 consisting essentially of the handle 15 shown as hexagonal in cross section with a plurality of bristles 16 secured to one end of the handle 15 by the ferrule 17. The edges 18 of the bristles are preferably inclined to the axis of the brush 14 as shown. The container parts consisting of the base 1 and cap 7 are preferably composed of a metal such as brass, steel, tinned steel, aluminum, molded plastic and the like.
The support or holder 8 is preferably composed of brass, a plastic material such as polyethylene, polystyrene, acetate or butyrate or a metal such as steel.
The handle 15 of the brush 14 is preferably composed of a material such as wood, a plastic material such as acetate, butyrate or styrene.
For securing the support 8 in the base 1 there is the slot having the portion 19 terminating in the inner free end of the support 8 and continuing in the portion 20, FIG. 5, which portion 20, see FIG. 3, continues in the axially extending portion 21. The slot portions .19, 20 and 21 receive the inwardly-extending projection 5. When inserting the support 8 in the base, the portion 19 of the slot initially receives the projection 5 which then passes into the portion 20 and finally into the portion 21.
In the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 8 the brush 22 also hexagonal in cross section has attached to one end thereof the bristles 23 by the ferrule 24. The bristles in this instance usable as a lip liner or an eye shadow producer have the edges 25 thereof formed in a line perpendicular to the axis of the brush 22.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 9 instead of the bristles 23 of the brush 22 illustrated in FIG. 8 there is used a conventional spiral 26 attached to the handle 27 which handle 27 also may be conformed to advantage in a hexagonal cross section. The embodiment illustrated in FIG. 9 is preferably used as a mascara applier on eyelashes. The ingredients in the tray of the several embodiments of course will differ depending upon the use for which the device is intended.
The embodiment illustrated in FIG. 8 when used as a lip liner may have as the ingredients a cosmetic cream, ointment or composition of wax such as beeswax, carnauba wax, cocoanut oil, petroleum and coloring agents. Excellent results have been produced when the mascara ingredients consists of cocoanut oil, palm oil and sodium soap.
When the unit is to be used for applying mascara to the shadow producer, the ingredient is preferably a creamy charcoal treated with a coloring agent to produce various shades of black, blue, green, gray, brown and the like.
When the unit is to be used for applying mascara to the eyelashes, then the ingredient is preferably a caked substance consisting of cocoanut oil, palm oil, sodium soap and a coloring agent.

As shown in the embodiment of FIG. 10, the handle 28 of the brush 29 is slightly longer than the handle of the brush 22 and is cylindrical instead of hexagonal in cross section and instead of the bristles 23 there is pro vided a felt tip frictionally held in place by having part of it pressed into the free end of the handle 28 with the tip 30 angled at its free end 31. In place of the tip 30, felt tips such as the tip 32 with its conical shaped end 33 or the tip 34 with its rounded and ball-shaped tip 35 of FIGS. 11 and 12 respectively may be used depending upon the use to be made of the device. The handle 28 may be composed of brass, Wood or a plastic material. The embodiments of FIGS. 10, 11 and 12 have to advantage that they may with facility be replaced or changed at will.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made to the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a cosmetic device, the combination of a support having a first elongated recess on one side, a tray for a marking ingredient positioned in said first recess, there being a second elongated recess in said support, a brush positioned in said second recess, there being a third recess in said support, and a casing having a tubular base and a cap, the cap telescopically mounted on said base, said base having an inwardly-extending projection positioned in said third recess, said third recess permitting said support to be slidably mounted in said base with the greater part of said support positioned in said cap when the device is out of use, said cap when telescopically mounted on said base covering the portion of said support extending from said base.
2. The combination as set forth in claim 1 in which said tray is composed of an inexpensive metal such as brass and the base is secured to the support by a sinuous groove in the third recess whereby the tray may be removed when the contents have been exhausted and replaced With a filled tray.
