This invention relates to cosmetic cases and particularly one of the type frequently designated as compacts, which is designed to incorporate not only the customary lipstickl and powder, but also a small vial of perfume.

One of the features which contributes to the success of a compact is its verycompatness so that it can be readily carried about in a purse or bag. Particularly when women attend formal affairs, they are accustomed to carry very small purses and on such occasions frequently iind it desirable to carry along not only lipstick and powder but asmall quantity of perfume also. For the most part, these items are carried separately, inasmuch as they are sold separately in stores. That is to say, there will be a separate container for lipstick, another for powder and rouge and if perfume is carried, a separate vial of perfume. When the items are used a cover must be removed from each one, so that when a lady sits down to make her toilet she has a great many separate articles scattered about the table.

For convenience in carrying these various articles, it is therefore among the objects of the invention to provide a new and improved threechamber container wherein one container may form the cap for the container in the second chamber and wherein all are joined together in a neat and convenient package which can be readily carried about ina purse.

Another object of the invention is to provide a new and improved container having several lchambers wherein' the different parts are so compactly positioned one above the other and so joined by pivotal means that any one chamber may be opened without it being necessary to open any of the other chambers. Still another object of the invention is to provide a new and improved multiple chamber compact which takes advantage of the resiliency of the material of which it is composed together with a special type of resilient hinge so that in spite of frequent openings and closings, the parts will always be capable of being retained snugly together so that the contents are properly held in place.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the de# vice whereby the obiects contemplated are at` tained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

In the past it has been the practice to make compacts relatively fiat so that they could be conveniently carriedv in a pocket book or purse or in the pocket of the user. The compacts previously used are relatively large in diameter, presumably in order that a suiciently large powder pui could be used. Where attempts have been made to include in compacts of this general description additional cosmetic articles, such las rouge and mascara, it has been necessary to make them so thick that they are inconvenient and undesirable. Moreover, when the thickness is increased, it is always necessary either to provide relatively sharp corners or to so increase the size in order to round the corners that the size becomes prohibitive. If the size of a device of this kind is increased, the problem of keeping the cover closed becomes greater, since a large cover is much more difiicult to hold tightly closed than a small cover. Then, too, the means for holding the cover tightly closed should not be so cumbersome and difficult lto manipulate that the cover cannot be quickly opened whenever desired. In order, therefore, to provide suitable accommodation for more than the customary powder in compacts some change of design becomes advisable.

In order, therefore, to provide a multiple chambered cosmetic receptacle, there is shown in the embodiment of the invention chosen for the purpose of illustration, a substantially cylindrically shaped compound case I Il which has a lower portion II, an upper portion I2 and a lid I3. In the lower portion is chamber I4 which opens downwardly and which has a threaded end I5 into which may be inserted a correspondingly threaded section I6 of a lipstick holder II, the outer portion of which overlies the bottom end of the case and forms a closure for the chamber I4. The lipstick holder may be provided with the customary stick type of lip rouge I8.

Immediately above the lower chamber is an intermediate chamber I9 separated from the lower chamber by a partition 20. The intermediate chamber is adapted to receive a small perfume vial 2I which may be seated in a resilient ring 22 so that it will not accidentally fall out of place.

In order to hold all of the parts in position, the upper and lower portions together with the lid are provided respectively with rearward extendingprotuberances 3i, 32 and 33-which are identical in cross sectional shape and positioned one above the other. A central bore 34 of uniform diameter extends through all ofI the protuberances and positioned within the bore is a shaft or pin 35. The pin is anchored at'itsupper end 3B by insertion into an insert 31 as by threading, the insert having been preferably moulded into the lid. The shaft is designed so as to be permanently attached to the lid once the device is assembled.

At its lower endthe shaft is threaded to receive a nut 38 which ts within an enlargement 39 at the end of the bore 34 forming a shoulder 40. Seated upon the shoulder is a dished, resilient washer 4I which is pressed into place by application of the nut 38 to the threaded end of the shaft. The washer may be of inherently resilient material or may be slotted so that it will have a spring effect. When the nut has been tightened into place upon the shaft, it will draw all of the parts of the case tightly together. By

We claim:

l. A combination multiple service compact including a, plurality of respectively moving parts comprising an elongated, rounded container having a lower and an upper chamber therein, a cosmetic carrying cap engaging the outer end of one of said chambers, a second rounded container having a chamber therein in axial alignment with the irst forming a cap for the other of said chambers in the iirst container, a cover for the chamber in the second container, detent means respectively between the cover and the second container and between lthe second and iirst containers comprising interengaging elements on the adjoining surfaces and a connecting shaft extending through the edges of the containers and cover comprising a pivot about which said parts respectively rotate one with relation to the other.

2. A combination multiple service compact including a plurality of respectively moving parts comprising a substantially cylindrical container having a lower and an upper chamber therein and a dividing partition, a hollow lipstick carrying cap threadably engaging the outer end of one of said chambers, a second smaller cylindrical container having a chamber therein in axial alignment withv the .first forming a cap for the other of said chambers in the rst container, a cover for the chamber in the `second container, detent means respectively between the cover and the second container and between the second and first container comprising a protuberance on one contacting surface and a cooperating receiving recess in the other and a connecting shaft extending through the edges of said containers and the cover comprising a pivot about which said parts rotate respectively one with relation to the other.
