IN V EN TOR. SAMUEL BIP/JU/V United States Patent ()fiiice 3,161,315 Patented Dec. 15, 1964 3,161,315 SPECIALTY BOX Samuel Braun, Rye, N.Y., assignor to Sperry Rand Corporation, New York, N.Y., a corporation of Delaware Filed May 7, 1962, Ser. No. 192,940 4 Claims. (Ci. 220-4) The present invention relates to a specialty box and it particularly relates to a plastic box for holding an article to be displayed or to serve as a receptacle when not in use.
Although not limited thereto, the present invention will be particularly described in its application to a display and consumer receptacle for a small ladies object, such as a ladies shaver.
It is among the objects of the present invention to provide a specialty box which may be utilized to receive and merchandise and carry small yet valuable articles, such as ladies electric shavers, which will be artistic and attractive in appearance and which may be readily manipulated to permit access to the article or to permit such article and its accessories to be placed away when not in use.
Another object is to provide a novel specialty plastic box which may be readily constructed and which will be of use both during merchandising and during usage of the device.
Still further objects and advantages will appear in the more detailed description set forth below, it being understood, however, that this more detailed description is given by way of illustration and explanation only and not by way of limitation, since various changes therein may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope and spirit of the present invention.
In accomplishing the above objects according to one form of, the present invention, the boxes consist of two sections, the lower container sections and a top cover section with the container sections being formed to nest together, with a single cylindrical closure and with a hinge element being provided to permit the elements to swing toward and away from one another on an edge pivot construction.
Desirably a push button of automatic character may be ';provided to assure convenient opening of the box and closure is achieved by causing the three elements to be 'moved together, one on top of the other, to form a complete cover closure.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views:
FIG. 1 is a top plan view of one form of plastic box, according to one form of the present invention.
FIG. 2 is a separated side view showing the various elements of the box removed from one another and elevated one above the other.
4 FIG. 3 is a transverse horizontal sectional view between the cover and upper container elements, taken upon the line 3-3 of FIG. 4.
FIG. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken upon the line 44 of FIG. 3.
FIG. 5 is a transverse vertical sectional View, taken upon the line 5-5 of FIG. 2 of the lowermost container section.
FIG. 6 is a transverse fragmentary sectional view,
taken upon the line 6-6 of FIG. 2 of the lowermost container section.
FIG. 7 is a top perspective view upon a small scale, showing the container elements separated from one another, with the container elements being carried by the single vertical pivot member and both container elements being available for receipt or removal of their contents, which may consist of a ladies razor and the accessories thereof.
Referring to FIGS. 1 to 7, there is shown a container structure A having the top cover element B, the middle or top container element C and the bottom or lowermost container element D.
The top cover element may be provided with considerable decoration, as indicated at C and D, molded into the top face thereof.
These three sections B, C and D are joined together by means of a vertical pivot rod E extending through an enlargement in one side thereof, as best shown in FIG. 4.
The upper portions of the top and the lowermost container elements C and D will have the button release elements F and G respectively, which cooperate with the hook shaped latching members H and J on the lower portions of the sides of the container elements C and D.
Referring particularly to FIG. 4, the cover B has an upwardly domed top wall 10, having a depending contact face 11 along the periphery thereof which is designed to closely contact the upper face 12 of the upper container element C.
The rear of the cover 10 has a depending nipple element 13 which receives the head portion 14 of the pivot pin E.
The pivot pin E, as shown in FIG. 4, will extend down through the socket 15 which receives the stud or depending portion 13 and also through the recesses 16 and 17 at the top and bottom portion of the enlargement 18 and also through the recess 19 in the top of the enlargemeat 20. I
The enlargements 18 and 20 are formed on one interior side of the interior of the containers C and D and it is vertically bored to receive the pivot pin E which terminates at 21.
The pivot pin 21 extends through the upper bored portion 22 in the enlargement 18 in the upper container portion C and also through the bored portion 23 in the enlargement 20 of the lower container section D.
The side walls of the containers C and D are relatively thick and cylindrical, as indicated at 24 and 25, and they have upwardly domed base portions 26 and 27 which are parallel to the top portion 10 of the cover B.
The upper and lower containers C and D are provided with recesses 28 and 29, through which project the heads 30 and 31 of the push button elements F and G.
v These push button elements extend rearwardly to the junction 32 with the circularly extending fin portions 33 and 34, which are engaged in the tabs 35 and 36 along the interior wall 37 of each container.
The fins 34 are provided with the upwardly projecting sto or latch 38, which contacts the inside wall 39 of the elongated circular structure 40. j
The "cover element B, as well as the bottom of the upper container C, have downwardly projecting hook members H and I with body portions 41 and 42 and circularly and forwardly extending latch portions 40 and 43.
These latch portions H and I will either latch the structure together, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 4, or, when actuated by the press buttons F and G, will release the structure so that it may be swung open to the receiving or removing position of FIG. 7.
Each of the elements, namely the cover 13 and the container elements C and D, may be readily molded of polystyrene or cellulose acetate or polypropylene or polyethylene. g
The pin elements E may be made of plastic or of metal and the latches may be readily formed of either metal or plastic.
The entire box assembly is very attractive and is readily cleaned and may be assembled and disassembled without difficulty,
As many changes could be made in the above specialty box, and many widely different embodiments of. this invention could be made without departure from the scope of the claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
