Description

RECORD CABINET Filed May 31. 1960 I" 3g 2 v W I 1% 4 Z INVEN TOR. may 11 52 424227 3,084,983 Fatented Apr. 9, 1963 3,034,983 RECURD KIABINET .Fanres N. Situart, 56 W. 119th St, Apt. 3, New York 26, NY. Filed May 31, 1960, Ser. No. 32,946 1 Claim. (Cl. 312-13) This invention relates to phonograph records and, more particularly, to an accessory therefor.
Ordinarily, the handling of individual records presents a problem to the record collector. It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a convenient cabinet for storing a large number of single records in a simple and convenient manner, which will safely store such records and present the same for use whenever required.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a dispensing type record cabinet having individual selector means for at least partly removing a particular record therefrom in a simple and convenient manner.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a dispensing type record cabinet of the type described which can be manufactured in large quantities at a relatively low cost, and which is extremely attractive in appearance and convenient for dispensing all types of standard phonograph records.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a dispensing type record cabinet made in accordance with the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a transverse cross sectional view taken along line 2-2 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged perspective view of an operating element of the present invention;
FIGURE 4 is a view similar to FIGURE 3 of still another part of the present invention;
FIGURE 5 is a view similar to FIGURE 3 of still an additional element of the present invention.
Referring now to the drawing, and more particularly to FIGURES 1 and 2 thereof, a dispensing type record cabinet made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a main housing 12 having a depressed front opening 14 within of which a plurality of individual shells 16 are mounted in spaced apart parallel relationship. Each shell 16 has panels or side walls 17 that define a compartment 18 Within which an individual record 3 8 is slidably received.
A spacer 20 is mounted within each such compartment 18 between the side walls 17 thereof and has a slot 22 within of which a plunger member 24 is slidably supported. The plunger member 24 includes a selector push button 26 and a cam actuator 28 that is slidably disposed in engagement with a cam surface 30 formed upon one end of support means in the form of a release member 32 that is pivotally mounted centrally upon a transversely extending pin 34. The opposite end of the release member 32 is provided with a finger 36 for engagement with the facing peripheiy of the record '38 upon inward movement of the push button 26. The upper central portion of the release member 32 is provided with an upwardly concave surface 40 which serves to retain the record 39 within the compartment 18 until the associated push button 26 is moved inwardly.
It will now be recognized that the particular size and shape of the main housing 12 is virtually unlimited, since each record compartment 18 is relatively self contained and includes its own actuating button 26. In response to an inward movement of the button 26, the actuating cam surface 28 thereof acting upon the cam surface 30 of the release member 32 causes the finger -36 to rotate upwardly into engagement with the record 38 to cause the same to roll outwardly from the concave surface 40 at least partially through the open end of its associated compartment. In such a position, the record may be manually removed from its compartment.
In order to facilitate the location of the records, the housing 12 is divided into separate sections by a color guide bar 42, each such section thereof having ten records and 10 associated push buttons 26. Thus, the selection may be made by reference first to the color section and then the record number under such color section.
The present invention also virtually locks the records 38 within the compartment until the push button 26 is depressed, thus enabling the main housing 12 to be carried from place to place without danger of the records 38 falling outwardly through the open end of the compartment. This is due to the fact that the record cannot move between the constricted space between the seat 40 and the upper end of its compartment until the outer end of the positioning lever 32 is depressed by the inward movement of the push button 26.
While this invention has been described with particular reference to the construction shown in the drawing, it is to be understood that such is not to be construed as imparting limitations upon the invention, which is best defined by the claim appended hereto.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A record cabinet comprising a housing that is open at the front, panels vertically disposed in the housing to provide compartments each for receiving a record, means disposed in the bottom of the compartments for spacing the panels and having a vertical leg with a slot therethrough, release means pivotally supported in the compartments each for receiving and supporting a record to be stored and having an arcuate groove corresponding to a portion of the edge of a record to be supported, each of said release means having an arcuate slot in the front end thereof, a cam surface, and selector means slidably supported in each of the spacing means leg slot and having an enlarged end portion defining a cam for engaging the cam surface to pivot the associated release means to release a record supported thereby when one such selector means is pushed toward the compartment.
