| F. ANDERSON 2,594,607
COMPACT Filed 001;. 5, 1950 April 29, 1952 Lura R Anderson INVENTOR.
Patented Apr. 29, 1952 U l'iED STATES PATENT OFFEG COMPACT Lura F. Anderson, Nashville, Tenn.
Application October 3, 1950, Serial No. 188,250
The present invention relates to improvements in compacts and more particularly to the type of compact which is designed to give the same benefits as a purse, but wherein the compact is of smaller size and more convenient than a purse.
An object of the present invention is to provide a compact that may be used as a complete evening purse, or wherein it may be carried in a conventional handbag for daytime use.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved compact which is adapted to carry cosmetics and make-up materials, change, nail file, and which is also constructed to include a hollow receptacle for holding cigarettes.
A further object of the present invention is to provide such an arrangement of elements that only the portions of the compact which are desired to be used are exposed, the other portions being completely covered by closure retaining plates and hidden from view.
Various other objects and advantages will be apparent from the detailed description to follow.
The best embodiment which I have contemplated applying my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the compact of the present invention shown in closed or folded position;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the compact in unfolded position showing all of the compartments exposed;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional View taken substantially along the plane of line 33 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken substantially along the plane of line d-4 of Figure 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals designate like parts throughout, numeral l8 designates generally the improved compact of the present invention.
lhe compact I8 is formed from upper and lower sections l2 and i4 hingedly connected together along a common longitudinal edge as at It. The upper section i2 is of substantially rectangular form having spaced upper and lower walls i3 and 2t and longitudinal walls 22 and 24. The upper wall it is provided with a circular opening at 26 and a cylindrical member 28 is positioned between the upper and lower wall providing a compartment in which may be carried rouge and a puff.
Above the rouge compartment is a change compartment 38 which is of substantially rectangular cross-section having an open outer face 32.
2 Claims. (Cl. 132-83) The central portion of the upper wall i8 is provided with an opening 34 which exposes a mirror 33 held by a plate 38 secured to the walls of the section.
The upper section I2 also includes a mascara compartment 48, a makeup tube compartment 42 and a brush retaining loop -i l juxtaposed to the makeup tube compartment d2. The mascara and makeup tube compartments may be open either at their upper faces or at their side faces 46 and 48.
Double closure retaining plates 58, 52 and 5d are hingedly connected to the upper section l2 at the transverse edges 56 and 58. Each of the double closure retaining plates includes a pair of plates hingedly connected together along a common edge 5|, 53 and 55, and has a finger-grip on its outer edge. Suitably positioned on the upper section 12 are buttons 58 which are adapted to cooperate with the snap recesses 88 on each of the closure plates 58, 52 and 54 whereby the first plates 62, 64 and 6-6 form vertical walls closing out the side walls of the section. It will readily be seen that the first wall 62 will act as a closure for the change compartment 38, and when the entire closure retaining combination is positioned over the change compartment, it will effectively conceal it.
From Figure 4, it will readily be seen that an opening 25 has been provided in the wall 24 with a slide closure 21 adapted to slidingly and selectively open and close the opening 25. Within the upper section [2 and behind the mirror 35, a
hollow receptacle is formed providing a cigarette compartment, access being had through the slide closure 21.
The lower section I4 is of similar construction to the upper section l2 and includes a pancake make-up compartment similar to the rouge compartment being formed by a circular opening 68 and cylinder 10 adapted to hold pancake make-up and sponge. The lower section also includes a dished portion 12 for holding a lipstick, with a groove 14 being provided at one end whereby the tip of the finger may be engaged with the lipstick tube for removal thereby.
A suitably contoured receptacle i6 is provided for receiving a water bottle to be used in conjunction with the pancake make-up and sponge.
A pair of pivoted retaining elements 88 are provided in longitudinally spaced relation and are adapted to retain a nail file 82 thereby.
The bottom section I4 is also provided with buttons 58 and snap recesses Bil for cooperation therewith and finger tip grips 56' on the outer edges of the closure plates 80 and 84. As in the upper section, the double closure retaining plates are formed from a pair of :plates hingedly connected together with the first plates 88 and 90 hingedly secured to the bottom transverse edges 92 and 94 of the lower section.
The upper section I2 is also provided with a latching element 96 which is adapted to cooperate with a pin button 98 whereby the entire compact may be held in closed or collapsed arrangement. The compact of the present invention may be formed from such metals as palladium, stainless steel or other metals of high finishing qualities.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A compact comprising upper and lower sections, a plurality of compartments in each of said sections, a hinge connection between a pair of common longitudinal edges of said sections, double closure retaining plates hingedly attached to transverse edges of said sections and adapted to be folded inwardly against their respective sections, said double closure plates including first and second portions hingedly connected together and with said second portions of said plates positioned between said sections when in folded position.
2. A compact comprising upper and lower sections, a plurality of compartments in each of said sections, a hinge connection between a pair REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
