L. CHURCHILL; Shirt-Bosom Attachment.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC LEE CHURCHILL, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
SH l RT-BOSOM ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,514, dated June 8, 1880.
Application filed August 21, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEE CHURCHILL, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented new and Improved Shirt-Bosom Straps,.of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to straps for retaining shirt-bosoms in place and preventing them from wrinkling while on the person.
Tabs have been used for this purpose attached to the bottom of the bosom, or straps attached to the sides and passed around the body; but in neither of these cases does the device fully answer the requirements.
My invention consists in straps attached to the sides of the bosom about midway between the bottom and neck, which straps are nonelastic, and have attached to them by buckles elastic ends that are fitted with devices for their connection to the wearers pants or drawers. The connection is made at about the hips, so that both a downward and sidewise strain is exerted upon the bosom in its upper portion, while the lower end of the bosom is free to conform to movements of the body.
The invention is shown by the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a front elevation of a shirt fitted with my improved straps. Fig. 2 is a front View, and Fig. 3 is a section, of the snap for connecting the strap to the pants or drawers.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The straps A are attached to the shirt and bosom at opposite sides of the bosom 13, either permanently by sewing, by buttons, or other means, and in case of bosoms that are detached partially from the shirt the straps A may be connected to the bosom alone. The
point of attachment may be about midway between the neck and bottom edge, or near or upon the bottom edge.
Each strap A consists of a non'elastic portion, a, that is connected to the bosom, and an elastic portion, 1), that is attached to a by means of a buckle or other device, permitting adjustment of the length. As the straps A will be connected where there are usually no buttons, I prefer to use on the outer ends of elastic straps b spring-snaps c, which may be attached readily upon the edge of the pants or drrwers. Buttons and button-holes and other devices may be used in place of the snaps c.
In use the straps A will be connected by the snaps c to the pants or drawers of the wearer at about, the hips, the direction of the straps A being in that case inclined, as shown in the drawings. The straps A will be drawn up to give the requisite tension to the elastic portion I), so that the strain will be both downward to keep the bosom from rising and outward to prevent wrinkling lengthwise. The straps A, being partially elastic, give to the movement of the body, while the bottom portion of the bosom is free. With the ordinary tab, as attached to the lower edge of the bosom, there is no way of adjustment and no elasticity, so that unless the bosom is of exactly the right length, which is rarely the case, the tab is useless. With my improved straps the proper result is not affected by the length of the shirt-bosom.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the bosom B, of the straps A, consisting of the non-elastic straps a, the elastic buckle-straps b, and the springsnaps c, or equivalent fastening, for connec tion with pants or drawers, as specified.
LEE CHURCHILL.
