Description
July 2,1935. H. s. JONES I 2,007,089
DISPLAY CARTON Filed June 11, 1934 INVENTOR H. S. JONES ATTORN EY Patented July 2, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DISPLAY CARTON Harry Stewart Jones, London, Ontario, Canada Application June 11,1934, Serial No. 730,125 In Canada March 28, 1934 1 Claim.
opening in the top of the box.
The objects of my invention are:
First, to provide a box or package wherein the goods are inserted by the sides of the box, the said sides being held in a closed manner by the folding of the flaps thereof.
Second, to provide a box or package wherein the goods may not be removed without opening the main cover or covers enclosing the same.
Third, to provide a box or package which may be stamped in one piece, easily folded and assembled and comparatively low in cost.
Other objects as well as many advantages of this invention will become apparent in the following description, supplemented by a drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the box with the flaps or covers partly open;
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the box, provided with one main flap; and V Fig. 4 is a plan view of the paper or cardboard stamping therefor.
The box is constructed of a flat piece of paper or cardboard, comprising a box top 5, in which a window 6 is stamped out, although this window need not necessarily be, but when so provided may be closed with transparent materials in order to exhibit the goods contained in the box and yet prevent any damage done thereto, which may be caused by dust, fingermarks, or atmospheric conditions.
Integral with the top are sides 1 and ends 8, hereinafter called sides and ends, respectively. One side of one of the ends of end 8 is integral with the bottom of the box 9, and the other side of such end 8 is integral with a lip l0, adapted to be glued or fastened to bottom 9 when the box is folded together, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Sides 1 each comprise an extension H forming the upright walls of the box and a tongue I2, adapted to fold and lie fiat in the box underneath the goods. The bottom 9 of the carton is also provided with extensions which merge into oppositely extending flaps M. The extensions l3 are so disposed as to provide outer side walls corresponding to the inner side walls formed by the extensions II and also so that the integral flaps I4 may fold over the box, as shown in Fig. 2.
As previously stated, all sections of this box comprise one unit, the different parts being defined by creases indicated by double lines. In making up the box or package, the stamping is folded on two creased lines joining the cover 5 and the bottom 9, so that the bottom lies underneath the top, and similarly the stamping is folded at degrees on the'creases of end 8, lip l0 being glued or fastened in some way to the bottom. The goods may then be inserted by the.-
openings provided at the two open sides which -may then be closed by folding on the creases between the top of the tongues l2, so that the same will lie as shown at I5 in Fig. 3, after which they may be opened in the manner shown at IS in the same figure; The box is then completely closed by folding flaps M on the creases on each side of extension I3, until they lie in the position shown in Fig. 2, forming a completely enclosed rigid package affording complete protection to the goods it contains.
If desired, one of the sides may have its tongue glued or otherwise fastened to the bottom of the package permitting entry of the goods by the other side only. Similarly, it may be said that only one flap l4 may be employed, if desired, as shown in Fig. 3. When two flaps are used, each may either overlap fully, as shown in Fig. 2 or may cover substantially one half of the top of the package. It is to be understood that, if desired, some means may be provided for fastening the flaps together.
What I claim is:
A foldable blank for producing a display carton comprising a one-piece body including a centrally apertured rectangular part formed with two spaced pair of spaced transversely extending parallel'scores dividing said part into a top forming portion, a pair of side wall forming portions hinged to and for folding downwardly from opposite sides of said top and a pair of tongue forming portions hinged to and for folding inwardly from the bottoms of said walls, an end wall forming part hinged at one side to and. folding downwardly from one end of said top, an oblong part hinged at one side to the other end of said top, formed at its longitudinal median with a score dividing it into the other end wall forming portion for folding downwardly from the other end of said top and a lip forming portion for folding inwardly from the bottom of said other side wall, and a rectangular part of greater length than and disposed in parallel spaced relation to said other rectangular part, said elongated rectangular part being hinged centrally of one side thereof to the other side of the said end wall forming part and formed with two bottom against the said side walls and a pair of oppositely disposed flap forming portions hinged to the other side of and for folding inwardly from said extensions in overlapping relation with respect to the outer face of said top.
