This invention relates to display containers and methods of filling them and removing articles therefrom and more particularly to the kind having lids serving to close the ficontainer as for shipping and also as a display space'for advertising, ornament and the like, though it is noted that the invention is not limited to display containers nor to methods.

One object of the invention is to provide a method and container of this kind permitting the container to be conveniently filled or packed with articles inserted at one end or part of the container by means of filling machines now well known upon the market, and after filling and closing to be suitably opened at another part for removal or display.

Another object of the invention is to provide a container of this kind having a folding display lid suitably formed to hold itself in display position.

Other objects of the invention are to provide a container of the above kind which may be shipped or packed as a one-piece blank, or ma be easily assembled and folded flat for packing or shipping and may be easily assembled or unfolded for use.

Another object is to provide a container of this kind having one'face adapted for display printing and comprising all of the parts which are exterior-1y exposed when the container is closed, and comprising, when the lid is open, all of the exterior part of the box and the forwardly exposed part of the display portion and lid.

Other objects of the invention are to 1m-.

prove generally the simplicity and efiiclency of such containers and to provide a device of this kind which is durable and reliable in use, and economical to manufacture.

while herein details of the invention are described and claimed, and invention is not limited to these, since many and various changes may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as claimed in the broader claims.

ment of these and other objects are'shown herein in connection with two improved containers each of which, briefly stated, comprises a blank cut and folded to form a box portion having front rear and end walls, and a lid joining the rear wall and provided with a wide front flap disposable against the front wall and having a tab attachable to the bottom.

One form has tucking flaps joining end edges of the lid, which flaps are adapted to be tucked inside the container or to form extensions of'the lid. In this form the lid and extensions are provided with fold lines along the main axis of the lid at the end edges of the lid, the lid being partially cut through from said points to points nearer the inner edge of the lid to form a display portion and foldable upon itself as to permit the display portion to be upwardly disposed and the ends of the extensions to the rest over the end walls of the container.

In either form the container is easily disposed in open condition at either end for filling, and its lid is easily openable for display or removal of articles therein.

My improved container 10 of Figs. 1 to 9 is made of a one-piece blank 11 (Fig. 9) cut and folded to form a container or box portion COIDPIlSlII a wide bottom 12 (Figs. 4, 7 and 9) end wa ls 13 foldably joining the end edges of the bottom and front and rear walls 14 and 15 (Figs. 3 and 6) joining the front and rear edges respectively of the bottom, and each rovided at each end edge with an inwardly olded corner flap 16 disposed along and secured by adhesive 17 (Fig. 4) to the adjacent portion of the inner face of the adjacent end walls 13.

While the rear and front walls are shown as having the same height, and the end walls v are rectangular rather than tapering, the invention is not thus limited.

A lid 20 hingedly. joining the upper edge of the rear wall and adapted to extend across from wall to wall is provided at the front edge with a front flap 21 foldably joining the lid along the entire front edge of the lid and substantially covering the front wall and provided at the mid art of its lower edge with a closing tab 22 fdldable, weakened and severable along the line 23 of the lower edge of the flap and secured by adhesive to the under face 'of the bottom 12.

Tucking flaps 25 foldably joining the respective end edges of the lid are adapted, when the lid is closed, to be tucked in the container ((Figs. 1, 3 and 4) and lie fiat against sai corner flaps 16 (Fi 4).

Said tucking flaps are disposaiile outwardly in the plane of the lid 20 (Fig. 2) to form extensions of the lid, said lid and extensions being provided with fold or score lines 26 substantially coincident with the longitudinal main axis of the lid and extending from the free edge of the extensionsto points 27 some distance from the end edge of the lid.

- The lid is provided with a cut 30 preferably symmetrical to the minor transverse axis of the lid, and extending as at 31 to near the inner edge of the lid to form a display portion 32 in part bounded by the cut.

The cut 30 is almost but not entirely out throu h the lid and is sufiiciently uncut to hold t e lid intact before the cut is broken through, thereby to hold articles 1n the container for shipping and storage.

However said out 30 is adapted when sa1d tab 22 is broken at the severable l ne 23, to be broken entirely through to permlt'thadlsplay portion 32 to be projected (Fig. 6) from the cut, and to permit the 11d 20 and the extended extensions 25 to be folded along the lines 26 until the parts of the inner face of the 'lid on each side of the fold lines engage each other, thus permitting the front flap 21 of the lid to be tucked against the back wall 15 (Fig. 6) behind material or articles in the container, to hold the lid folded and to hold the display portion 32 projected upwardly, with its outer face faced forward,

for the display of advertising or other printed matter thereon.

In this position the end portions of each extension 25 are folded flat against each other and project over, and may partly rest 011, the upper edge of the end Walls.

The blank 11 (Fig. 9) is provided with suitable score or fold lines 23, 26 and 37 whereby the various parts hereinbefore men tioned are foldable. This permits the container to be first folded to the form shown in Fig. 2 after which the tab 22 may be secured by adhesive to the container bottom. In this position the end flaps, end walls and tucking aps are extended.

The container, when the corner flaps 16 and container end walls 13 and the tucking flaps 25 are open and extended as in Fig. 2, is adapted to receive, and be packed with a pack of articles which it is to receive, the container being particularly suitable for accomplishing such packing by means of the ordinary packing and filling machines now on the market. After the container is thus filled with the articles, the end walls 13 are secured to the corner flaps 16 by adhesive 17. When the articles are to be displayed or removed, the tab 22 is severed and the lid opened.

One face of said blank 11 is particularly adapted for display printing since it comprises all of the parts which are exteriorly exposed when the container is closedas in Fig. 1 and comprising, when the lid is open, all of the exterior part of the box itself, the forwardly exposed part of the display portion 32 and lid and all of the exposed parts of the extended tucking flaps 25.

When the end walls 13 and flaps l6 and 25 are open and extended 'as in Fig. 2, and said closing tab 22 secured or unsecured, the container is adapted to be folded flat upon itself at the front or rear edge of the bottom 12 and the opposite edge of the lid 20 to form a flat article (Fig. 8) for shipping or storing.

The container 40 shown in Figs. 10 to 13 comprises a blank 41 (Fig. 12) cut and folded to form a bottom 42, end closure walls 43, and front and rear walls 44, 45 foldably j oining the end, front and rear edges of the bottom, the walls 44,.45 being each provided with corner flaps 46"disposable across the ends of-the container as in Figs. 11 and 13. The end closure walls 43 are engageable against the outer face of the corner flaps 46 and are each provided with a tucking flap 47 foldably joining the free edge of the closure wall and disposable over the top edge of the corner flaps 46.

A lid 50 joining the upper edge of the rear wall and engageable with the top face of the tucking flaps when tucked is provided with a front flap 51 foldably joining the freeedge of the lid and disposable against the front face of the front wall i l and provided at its free edge with a sever-able tab 52 connected to the front flap by the severable fold line 53 and adapted to be secured by adhesive to the bottom face of the bottom.

The blank 41 is provided with score or fold lines 53 and 57 by which the various parts of the container are foldably connected.

The filling, display, packing and other manipulation is substantially the same for the container of Figs. 10 to 13 as for the other container, except that the tucking flaps are tucked against the lid and the end walls need not be otherwise secured, and the lid isnot foldable, though this form of the invention is not limited to the unfolded lid.

While in this specification and claims I speak of the bottom,vtop, ends front and rear of the container and mention that parts are foldably joined, it is understood that I use these words for designation and they are to be construed broadly enough to cover the box in other position, or relative dimensions and when parts are connected by other than score lines, and in general the terms are to be given the broadest interpretation possible.

I claim as my invention:

1. A container comprising a box portion; a lid for the box portion provided with a front fiap having a tab attachable to the bottom of the box portion, said tab being scored at the inner edge thereof, for readily detaching said front flap therefrom and tucking flaps joining the ends of the lid and adapted to be tucked inside the container or to form extensions of the lid; said lid and extensions being collapsible along the main axis of the lid transversely of said tucking flaps.

2. A container comprising a bottom; front, rear and end walls; a lid joining the upper edge of the rear wall and provided with a front flap disposable against the front wall and provided with a tab secured to the under face of the bottom, said tab being scored at the inner edge thereof, to be readily detachable from the front flap tucking flaps joining end edges of the lid and adapted to be tucked 1nside the container or to form extensions of the lid; said lid and extensions having almed longitudinal fold lines at the ends of the lid at said extensions reaching to points some distance from the edges of said lid; the lid being partially cut through from said points to near the inner edge of the lid to form a display portion and adapted with said extensions to be collapsed upon itself along the fold lines.

3. A container comprising a box portion; and a lid for the box portion provided with a front flap having thereon a tab attachable to the bottom of the box portion, said tab being scored at the inner edge thereof and tucking flaps foldably joining the ends of the lid and adapted to be tucked inside the container or to form extensions of the lid; said lid and extensions being collapsible along the main axis of the lid transversely to said extensions, thereby permitting the end edges of the extensions to rest on the top edge of the end walls.

4. A container comprising a one-piece blank cut and folded to form a container or box portion comprising a wide bottom; end walls foldably joining the end edges of the bottom; front and rear walls foldably joining the front and rear edges respectively of the bottom, and each provided at each end edge with an inwardly folded corner flap disposed along and secured to the adjacent portion of the inner face of the end walls; a lid hingedly joining the upper edge of the rear Wall tucking flaps joining end edges of the lid and adapted to be tucked inside the container; said tucking flaps being adapted to form extensions of the lid; said lid and extensions having fold lines substantially along the main axis of the lid transversely to said extensions, whereby said lid and said extensions may be collapsed and said lid being provided-with severable means adapted to be secured to said bottom.

5. A container comprising a box portion fiont rear and end walls; a lid joining the rear wall; and tucking flaps joining end edges of the lid and adapted to .be tucked inside the box or to form extensions of the lid; said lid and extensions being foldable along the main axis of the lid at the edges of the lid and extensions; the lid being partially cut through from points to points nearer the inner edge of the lid and foldable upon itself to permit the collapsing of said lid with said extensions and the ends of the extensions to be projected over the end walls, said lid being provided with severable means secured to said bottom.

6. A container comprising a box portion; a lid for the box portion having a fold line along its main axis whereby saidlid may be collapsed and provided with a front flap foldably joining the lid along the entire front edge of the lid and substantially covering the front wall and provided at the mid part of its lower edge with a closing tab foldable, weakened and severable along the line of the lower edge of the flap and secured to'the under face of the bottom.

7. A container comprising a-box portion having front, rear and end walls; a lid joining the rear wall and provided with a front flap disposable against the front wall and having thereon a tab which is attachable to the bottom; and tucking flaps joining end edges of the lid and adapted to be tucked insidethe box or to form extensions of the lid; said lid and extensions having a fold line along the main axis of the lid at the edges of the lid and extensions transversely to the latter; the lid being partially cut through from points to points nearer the inner edge of the lid to form a display portion, and collapsible upon itself with said extensions to permit the front fla of the lid to be tucked against the back wall behind material or articles in the container, to hold the lid with said extensions collapsed and the display portion projected upwardly, with its outer face faced forward, said lid embodying severable means secured to said bottom.

8. A container comprising a blank cut and folded to form front rear and end walls foldably joining the edges of the bottom respectively; the front and rear walls being provided at each end with a corner-flap secured to the inner face of the end walls; a lid joining the upper edge of the rear wall and provided with a front flap substantially covering the front wall and provided with a tab secured to the under face of the bottom, said tab bein scored at the inner edge thereof, to be rea ily detachable from said front flap; tucking flaps oininlg the edges of the lid and adapted to be tuc ed agalnst said corner flaps; said tucking flaps bein disposable outwardly to form extensions 0 the lid; the container, when the end walls and corner and tucking flaps are open being adapted to receive, and be packed with, articles which it is to receive, by means of known packing and filling machines.
