PATENT OFFICE T ILLINOIS, a CORPORATION or ILLINOIS s srno'rAcLE CASE 1 Applicatioufiled August 8, 1932. Serial No. 627,864.
My present invention relates co-spectacle or eyeglass cases such as are ordinarily employed for carrying the glasses in a, pocket when not being used, and its obj ect isthe pro '5 vision of such a case which shall be free from certain objections or defects inherent in cases 'of this character as ordinarily constructed, and shallbe more durableand more desirable for the purposes to beservedthan are spectacle cases of similar'character heretofore 1 known. This object I attain through the novel form and arrangement ofthe box parts, the essential elements of my invention being more particularly pointed out in the appended claims. I
In the drawing, v j

show the arrangement, of superimposed parts i and partly broken away Fig. 4 is a front edge view of the case; Fig. 5 is a cross-section in a plane indicated I by the dotted line 55 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a fragmentary vertical section in I a plane indicated by the dotted line 6-6 of I Fig. 3.
Like reference characters indicate like parts in all the figures ofthe drawing.
My novel spectacle case, as in the case of' ordinary cases of usual construction, includes two covered sheet metal members, a body member 1 and a lid member 2,,which are formed at the rear with aligned hinge rolls 3 connected by a pintle 4 and a spring 5 which in opposite extreme positions of the mem- 0 bers yieldingly holds such members alternatively either in open or closed relation.- The lower or body sheet metal member 1 is formed with a continuous rounded upwardly extending section forming the front side 6 and rear side 7 and the end portions 8-8 of the case,

latter is closed.
Fig. 3 is a top'planview of the case, closed formed upon parallel straightvlines which merge tangentiallyv intothelcurved end por- At the-top of thefront side 6 of the body and extending between the endsof-the straight from portions ofsuchfront side, the side merges into "a retaining flange, ,9 which extends in an inclined direction rear "wardly to fit smoothly under the lid when the This particular form and construction of the parts of the sheet metal box body mem- 'Tber enablesth'e' ornamental fabric or imitation leather covering 10 to be carI'iedcom- 'pletel v around the endsand front side and.
retaining flange of the body, without pre senting a raw edge of thecovering material at any point, and the box body is of rounded shape throughout its entire extent and presentsfno anglesat any point exposed to wear. The cover fabric, it will beunderstood, is carried at the rear side around the hinge rolls and extends over the'l'id of the box, later to be described. I
It may here be explained that in spectacle or eyeglass cases of ordinary construction the arcuateends of the box meet thestraight front and rear sides at an angle, and the retaining flange extends in a straight line from one end wall to the other, whereby the covering necessarily presents a raw edge at the ends of such retaining flange, and whereby j angles are formed at the two junction points between the front side and ends which are exposed to wear to such a degree that the cov ering invariably wears away at those points while it is yetrpresentable in appearance and serviceable elsewhere. I I The sheet metal lid member 2 of the case is of rounded outline corresponding to the body member and is similarly covered with a portion of the fabric 10, as already stated; The inside of both the box body and the lid members iscovered with a lining 11 of plush or other suitable material which extends over and conceals the hinge members and also the inturned edge of the covering material 10 around the inside of the meeting edges of the box body and lid. 1
Preferably the lid does not extend outside of or overhang the body of thebox. atanyEiltion incident to such constructions.
of the lid is provided wit-h a curved thumb notch 12, and on each side of such notch the edge of the lid is formed with a shallow cupped bend or lip 13, so that the case may be grasped by either hand, with the thumb opposite the thumb notch 12 of the lid but not contacting it, and the lid then conveniently manipulated by applying the thumb of the other hand to one or the other of the lips 13 at the edge of the lid.
I claim:
1. A spectaclecase including a sheet metal box body member formed with an integral front side portion formed upon straight lines and curved end portions merging tangentially into said. front portion at its ends and a retaining flange continuous with the top of said front portion and extending upwardly and rearwardly therefrom, said retaining flange tapering in width adjacent its ends to meet said curved end portions of the body member, and a covering of flexible material extending over the outer faces of the box body and folded continuouslyover the edges of said end portions and said retaining flange.
2. A spectacle case comprising a sheet met-- portion and extending upwardly and rearwardly therefrom, said retaining flange tapering in width adjacent its ends to meet said curved end portions, a lid member hinged to said rear side portion of the body memher, and a covering of flexible material ex-.
tending over the outer faces of the body and lid members and folded continuously over the edges thereof.
8. A spectacle case comprising a box body having end sections and front and rear side sections and a retaining flange extending rearwardly from the top of the front side" section, and a lid hinged to the rear side seek tion and seating upon said end sections and i said retaining'flange, the front edge of said lid being formed with a central thumb notch and with shallow curved'lips on opposite sides of said notch,
